We were ****ing fantastic last night. Absolutely unbelievable. I though Ratten coached really well with some really good coaching moves (Robinson tagging Fletcher, Judd head to head with Watson etc). And most importantly, some of our lesser players put in some pearlers.

Despite this, it's all about consistency. I really hope the attitude of our players is, when they are under pressure, put in an absolute belter, then relax the next week. Hopefully this is the confidence booster they need, but not too much of a confidence booster that they take the foot off the pedal.

In my eyes, Ratten is still under pressure, you can't just ignore the last two months. Russell and Gibbs are still under pressure, and most importantly, it can be easy to put in a great performance when the team is playing well.

In no means is this thread negative, i couldn't have loved last night more, and trust me, it doesn't get much better than thumping essendon after a losing streak, but it is all about next week. We've seen the intensity these boys can show, and that's what we should expect every week (give or take, they will obviously put in the odd bad game due to youth)

Our intensity was fantastic all night and our last quarter was excellent, however gee if essendon had of kicked better for goal we most likely would of be in all sorts of trouble at 3/4 time.

Nevertheless great win and man we needed it

It will be very interesting to see how we come out next weekend. See if we continue with the good stuff or revert back to the crap we were playing with.

Incorrect big red! the bummers kicked just 9 goals, 5 of which were directly from free kicks and 50m penalties, thought we had them all night

Yeah agree with the OP, last night's really good performance just takes the heat off for one week, we have to back it up and convincingly beat the Tiger's, they are playing reasonable football atm but we are clearly much further in our development and have a better side on paper, clearly we have to stop Riewoldt and prevent Deledio's runs off half back

You're absolutely right. Head down, bum up. Work for it on a consistent basis.

Somewhere I have this suspicion that come finals time it may be the opposition who is underestimating us.

Just need to go out there week in, week out with the same intensity. I can live with losing the free kick count by a wide margin much more than I can not having the intensity to begin with.

If we lose and we've brought the intensity that they displayed last night, so be it. That's an acceptable loss. However, if the team is weak as piss and never brought it - that's where the criticism is justified. That's all any fan can ask for.

I must admit I'm disappointed that Ratts had to publicly label them soft for them to turn up with the right attitude. Hopefully they realize that they are very dangerous when they do and turn up with that mindset each and every week they play.

It was brilliant seeing them laying tackles and putting pressure on the opposition ball carrier like that. We didn't let those basterds breathe last night and that needs to happen on a consistent basis!

Have heard Dennis Cometti three times (on 7 and 3AW) say Carlton are in the finals, including just moments ago to Brett Ratten.

My maths tells me if we lose next week we will miss finals - or at least be sweating on other teams losing.

Next weeks game against Richmond as big a game as last night. Hope the players bring the same intensity as last night.

Agreed. It's nuts that it's taken until now for players to realise what was required of them, but better late than never. And if they backslide next week, this win will mean nothing.

Upside:

a) A major leap in attitude, attack, and work ethic.
b) We didn't shit ourselves because of one-sided umpiring.
e) We won the first quarter.
c) We went on with it and put them to the sword.
d) Warnock nailing centre bounces against pretty good opposition.
e) Bower is gaining confidence.

However...

Discounts:

a) Essendon lost a few rotations with injuries to Davey and Winderlich.
b) They butchered most of their scoring chances.

Downside:

a) Gibbs - where were you?
b) Eddie's schizo kicking.
c) Davies needs more time to adjust to the pace of AFL. Hopefully he'll get another chance next week.

What are you talking about. If it wasn't for horrendous umpiring they wouldn't have kicked a score. Much of their inaccurate kicking was just desserts for gleefully accepting free kicks that they hadn't earnt.
