Recently bought a pIII 1.7Ghz, 256MB ram, 32MB graphics card, 40GB hard drive and running Windows XP. When i install and play games like GTA3 and AFL 2003 they are very sluggish, even Quake3 isn't quite what it should be. Surely my machine has enough grunt to handle these games without any problems? I think perhaps i have some settings on my PC that need adjusting but i wouldn't have a clue where to look. Any sugestions?

How much free hard drive space, and what type of graphics card?

If it's only a GeForce2 MX 32MB or something equally ancient, it will knacker your system completely in game terms.
um..it probably is a GF2 MX, i don't know off the top of my head. So what graphics card should i upgrade to (bear in mind i am a tightarse)?

GeForce 4 TI 4200 is pretty much entry level, will definitely do the trick. Just don't buy a GF4 MX440, it's a cheap version of the standard GF4 and you get what you don't pay for ;)

its not ur video card.
I got a tnt2 ultra 32meg

i think its ur video drivers
www.nvidia.com

q3 should run at around 120-140 frames in corner of a wall at 800*600 res at 32bit colours and when ppl around 40-80fps on.

U have a gforce 2 sooo u should get better performance than wat i get above

For quake set setting
\com_maxfps 150 or 200, howeva highest fps u can get
\cg_drawfps 1

GTA3 has problems with various video cards. Don't expect anything to be because of you harware with this poorly written game. Anyway, get the latest video card drivers or upgrade your video card. As Mr. Eagle said, stay right away from the GF MX cards. Buy something like a GF 4200, Radeon 9000 or if you are willing to spend a bit more, a Radeon 9500.

Do you have any anti-virus programs running in the background? With XP these can quite often affect your computers performance and ability to play games. Its interesting to note that some of the new games have started printing a warning about this in their handbooks. It is always recommended that you shut down your anti-virus when playing a game as it can interfear.

I can't play sims unleashed with mine running.. It slows right down, locks up, the sound stutters and just becomes unbearable.

The other problem a lot of ppl have is trying to run too high a resolution in the game. Have you tried adjusting your game settings to a lower res to see if that makes a difference?

Ugghh...i have an internal SiS video card, SiS_650_651_M650_740. Quake3 runs at maximum 30fps, and that's when i switch to Fast graphics mode. I don't have any spare slots on my machine for a new video card so it looks like i am stuck with it!
