A discussion that I had with my aunty and uncle lastnight got me thinking about who IVF should be available to. They have two healthy children and have tried, unsuccessfully, to have third and want to try their luck with IVF. My gripe is that they already have two children and that IVF should be available to those who cannot naturally conceive children in the first place.

I could understand if they couldn't conceive naturally at all, but obviously nature is only allowing them to have two kids. I just don't see why couples who already have children would want to go on the IVF merry go round.

Leave it to your aunt and uncle. It is their decision and not your decision.

I am all for it. Even if they want kids and have had trouble conceiving then IVF is the way to go.

Don't you want more cousins?

I have 10 cousins who don't play AFL.

I have heaps of cousins who have and currently do play AFL and I have some who don't. But because I am adopted, my family is extended.

I have 4 cousins from my natural family who don't play AFL and I have 6 others who have played and currently play AFL I also have one who currently umpires in the AFL.

Is your concern that somebody else will miss out on IVF treatment or that they simply should not have more children?

I'm more concerned about the fact that there might be other couples out there who don't have any children, and need the IVF treatment more than those who already have children but just want more. I think there should be some sort of criteria as to who is eligible to receive treatment and when (ie childless couples before couples that already have children).

Is it entirely user-pays or is it subsidised?

It's my understanding that couples are subsidised for their first 5 or 6 ( ) rounds of IVF treatment, and a gap still exists. After the subsidised rounds the couple has to pay the full cost of the treatment.

Is there anyone here who is good at mathematical problem solving who could decipher this for me?

User pays, and it's not subsidised,
In that case, to answer Prize Bitch's question - as long as it's not costing the taxpayer anything and your aunt & uncle are willing to pay, then there's no reason why not.
While health costs are blowing out and hospital waiting lists are as horrendous as they are; I can't see any justification for a subsidised IVF program for anyone, let alone people who already have children or who are physically able to. The health budget could be better spent looking after the people we've already got rather than making more.
The fact that it's not subsidised indicates that the health departments feel the same way. It's tough on people who are struggling financially who want children and can't have them; but unfortunately the budgets are limited, health care is becoming more and more expensive and the money that a subsidised IVF program would cost could be better spent elsewhere.
