Wouldn't say he is the best inside mid out of contract i think that still goes to jack viney.
Would say he is arguably the best tagger and the best tackler in the comp.

Think he will re-sign with the saints most likely, but open market 4 years 550k a year perhaps.

Tough one to gauge value on.

3rd in our last two B&F's (despite playing the 2nd half of last season with a knee injury that required surgery) and one of the very best 2 or 3 in the league at finding plenty of the footy while doing tagging/run-with roles, so I highly doubt we lose him.

550k is unders for a bloke finishing top 3 in the last 2 bnfs

add another 100k to that on the open market

He won't leave the Saints, given how keen he was to join them.

Surely Essendon are all over this one?

Not an elite player, but at worst he’s a very solid inside midfielder with a bit of improvement to come.

Wanted him from GWS, IMO he’s been a little wasted in the run with role.
Becoming our tagger was the making of him as a player. He was having trouble finding the ball and impacting games so giving him a very defined role that lead him to the ball made him a much better player. Tagging actually helped raise his disposals, marks and clearances which is quite unusual.

That said, the plan is for him to be released from those duties this year which will be good to see.

Viney would be better than Steele in some areas (so far- time will tell how they go this year), but Steele is a much better kick (and more dual-sided) and a vastly stronger overhead mark/threat in the air. Steele has some pretty vice-like hands, and is obviously inches taller.

I think the role just got him around the ball more, which is why he appeared to improve doing it so much. Hard to get good minutes in the rotation when you’re only a third year player. Doesn’t hurt that he was good at being accountable but I think he should have been released more last year.
