Contender: Jack Steven
Jack sets a great example for our young group and is incredibly important for what we’re trying to build at our footy club.
Alan Richardson
Midfield ace Jack Steven has etched his name into St Kilda Football Club history, joining Robert Harvey and Bill Cubbins as a four-time winner of the Trevor Barker Award.

Only Nick Riewoldt (six) has won the Saints’ highest honour more times than Steven, who has now won four Trevor Barker Awards in six seasons.

The 28-year-old finished on 191 votes, edging out fellow midfielder Seb Ross (175) and tackling machine Jack Steele (134).

Emerging star Jade Gresham (126) and skipper Jarryn Geary (118) rounded out the top five.

Steven dominated the count early, polling 50 votes in the first six rounds, before finishing with 18 votes in Round 23 to hold off a late charge from Ross.

Senior Coach Alan Richardson said the best-and-fairest was testament to Steven’s consistency and on-field leadership.

“Jack really led the way in the first half of this season. While we were inconsistent as a team, Jack continued to deliver week-in, week-out. It’s testament to the type of player and leader he is,” Richardson said.

“Jack sets a great example for our young group and is incredibly important for what we’re trying to build at our footy club.”

The Trevor Barker Award sees five coaches independently award votes between zero and four to players throughout the season to determine the best and fairest.

A candid Jack Steven has revealed his "out of character" inquiries at his exit meeting and ruled out pursuing any potential interest from Geelong.

AFL.com.au understands the 28-year-old questioned the club's hierarchy about whether there would be another rebuild, and if he would be better served searching for a flag elsewhere.

However, the Saints are determined to rebound quickly and will likely land Sydney midfielder Dan Hannebery during the NAB AFL Trade Period.

Steven explained to reporters why he asked the "hard-hitting questions".

"I think that's probably down more to my personality. it was probably a little bit out of character for me," Steven said.

"That meeting wasn't necessarily that crazy – that probably happens a lot over the AFL world, but I'm pretty low-key and pretty reserved, so if I've spoken up a little bit, it was probably a little bit out of character.

"I think that's where maybe the story came from, but there was nothing really that crazy. It was a pretty productive meeting really.

"I caught up with Richo yesterday (Tuesday) for a coffee.

"He was pretty happy with the (exit) meeting but obviously I'm pretty quiet and reserved and I've now come in with a few hard-hitting questions, it might've been a little bit different."

Steven, a member of the leadership group, found his voice because he wanted to understand why the Saints had found themselves in their predicament, having won four games in 2018.

"I just think it was because of our progression. The last three years, it's been so exciting each year. We've probably gone up, up, up, I'd say, and then this year's been definitely a dip," Steven said.

"You just ask why. It'd be weird not to. If you walked into that meeting happy, it'd just be like, what are you doing? I want to win games, I want to win premierships."

As far as Steven's concerned, he did what was necessary.

"It's my profession as well. I think it's my job to ask and it's their job to answer and they answered well. That's just how it's at," Steven said.

"I think this time of year, stories get blown out of proportion and stories are made all about the trade."

Asked directly whether he would be at the Saints in 2019, Steven responded, "Yeah, yeah. I'm contracted and very happy."

Hailing from Lorne on Victoria's west coast, the connection with the Cats is obvious, but he hasn't spoken to them.

"Because I'm from down the coast, I think they've always loved the Falcons boys. Won a best and fairest down there so they've probably had me on their radar possibly, I'm not too sure," Steven said.

Contracted until the end of 2020, don't expect to see Steven leaving any time soon.

"I'm happy at the Saints. I don’t really see how that could change," Steven said.

He sees improvement coming from those who struggled this season.

"I really rate a lot of our boys that had average years this year and I think it's not up to me necessarily, but those boys who can lift. I see such big upside. I'm so excited," Steven said.

Steven declared his confidence St Kilda would thrive soon enough.

"I can't wait for the years to come. We've got a big bunch of boys that are all the same age. I'm probably a little bit older now, which is a little bit scary, but I'm looking forward to the future," Steven said.

The Saints star took home his fourth best and fairest on Wednesday night, bringing himself level with Robert Harvey.

Steven was delighted to win but the comparison to the Saints great, who wore No.35, made him uneasy.

"It's not good, not good. I was No.34 when I first came in, so I sat next to him. I knew who he was then, and I knew how great he was then and it doesn't feel good at all, but I guess that's what happens," Steven said.

A sleepy beachside cove on the Great Ocean Road would seem the unlikeliest of hometowns for one of St Kilda’s most decorated players.

But on Wednesday night, Lorne local Jack Steven won his fourth Trevor Barker Award, drawing level with fellow four-time winners dual-Brownlow Medallist Robert Harvey and legendary fullback Bill Cubbins.

Now, Nick Riewoldt is the only Saint to have won more Trevor Barker Awards than Steven, with a total of six.

It’s legendary company, but Steven shouldn’t feel out of place.

The workhorse they call ‘Stuv’ epitomises the Saints’ motto, Strength through Loyalty, and has consistently shown unrelenting effort for his footy club over a decade.

Like Harvey before him, the 28-year-old finishes every single game utterly spent of energy and drenched in sweat, and his explosion from stoppage after stoppage echoes shades of the great No. 35.

In the same vein, Steven lets his football do the talking.

‘Banger’ was never the most vocal player on the field, but he was eternally among those with the biggest impact on the game, and the Saints’ No. 3 has been cut from the same cloth.

His blue-collar, never-say-die approach is perfectly punctuated by flashes of brilliance and ingenuity, his lightning-quick feet and sudden bursts of acceleration a weapon concealed until it’s too late for opposition chasers.

Steven’s unorthodox running style was historically a point of derision among the red, white and black faithful, but his ability to motor away and leave a path of near-misses and exhausted opponents has endeared him to the mob.

Five-time Trevor Barker Award podium-finisher Leigh Montagna didn’t hold back in his praise for his old teammate on Wednesday night.

“It’s remarkable what he’s actually done,” Montagna told saints.com.au.

“And I think he’s still got a few more up his sleeve; he’s still pretty young.

“Even among active players in the competition, he’s only behind Scott Pendlebury and Gary Ablett Jr in terms of best-and-fairests, so it’s remarkable what he’s doing.”

‘Joey’ laughed as he recalled a fresh-faced Steven walking through the doors at Moorabbin for the first time.

“He was just a schoolkid from Lorne, he was a bit of a ratbag, and he probably still always will be, but he’s just matured so much and become a strong leader of the football club,” he said.

“That’s always been his attitude – he was always pretty laidback – but he just loves competing and just chasing the ball around. He gives great effort, and that’s all you really want.”

But it’s Steven’s tireless determination that gives Montagna the most pride.

“The thing we most admire is just his effort week-in, week-out, it never deviates, and he gives his all every game.

“Whether he’s in form, whether he’s injured, whether he’s sore, whether we’re winning or losing, he plays with the same intensity every single week.

“And he trains in exactly the same way. Every session he goes flat out – that’s the way he plays, so it’s no surprise that he keeps racking up best-and-fairests.”

Since its inception in 1914, 42 Saints have won the club’s highest individual honour, and now only one has won more than Jack Steven.

Not 100% sure how to approach this being a first time advocate but lets start with a review of 2018.

Lets be honest it was a poor year overall for St Kilda and after an underwhelming 2017 season for Jack (I don't think he ever really recovered from the punctured lung in Round 2) on a personal level he bounced back in 2018. Whilst I don't believe his season was as good as his 2015 or 2016 seasons it was still good enough to take home his fourth club Best and Fairest and ended up 8th in the Brownlow with a career high of 18 votes.

Jack was linked briefly with Geelong in the post season circus but thankfully that ended up more smoke than fire and he remains a St Kilda player contracted to the end of the 2020 season.

Turning 29 at the start of the 2019 season there is certainly still some good years in front of Jack and with any luck the recruitment of Dan Hannebery, along with the likes of Ross and Billings returning to form could see Jack not having to deal with a tag as often as has been the case in the last couple of years.

Hoping to see plenty of his trademark run and carry in the 2019 season and it whilst they don't play for individual rewards it would be fantastic for Jack to have a good enough season to be rewarded with All Australian selection so others can appreciate what us Saints fans already know.

Get well soon Jack

STAR St Kilda midfielder Jack Steven will take an indefinite break from the club as he deals with mental health issues.

Saints football manager Simon Lethlean paid tribute to Steven's decision.

"Jack's decision to put his hand up and acknowledge that he needs some time away is a brave one," Lethlean said.

"He is a much-loved member of our playing group and has the support of all his teammates, his coaches and all St Kilda supporters."

Brave of Stuv to put his hand up.
Many people in society don't do this for a whole range of reasons.

Hope to see you back soon Stuv!
