JACOB WEITERING

DANDENONG STINGRAYS
195CM, 94KG

Is Jacob Weitering this year's No.1 draft pick?

"JACOB Weitering took six marks in the opening quarter, three of which were contested.

He jumped, stuck his hands out and wrapped them around the ball so tightly it sounded like it the Sherrin was about to pop each time.

He kicked the ball 60m out of the backline off two steps, and directed play.

That Weitering did all of it while playing for the NAB AFL Academy against Werribee's VFL side, and matched up against North Melbourne forward Majak Daw, made it even more impressive.

Since that 35-minute opening term last month at Simonds Stadium (the quarter stretched on and on), the key defender has been the clear favourite as this year's No.1 draft pick."

Weitering is the real deal.

I remember sitting at AAMI last year watching the country vs SA champs game and noticing Country's CHB. Had unique composure, courage, skills, footy IQ, marking and read of the ball in flight. Was a 16 year old Weitering. What I saw from him as a 16 year old competing against kids already 18 was something else, and something I haven't seen in a key position player for a long time. He's continued to grow and improve on what he already excels in.

I wouldn't be comparing Weitering to Rance or Taylor. He's better. As far as I'm concerned he's a once in a generation defender and a clear as day #1 pick, provided the team is willing to part with pick one for a defender which would be rare.

considering no tall forwards have put their hand up for #1 so far, if the lions get the #1 pick im sure they wouldn't hesitate if he was a standout #1 pick. Lions need both tall forwards & backs badly. They can use the Aish deal to get a forward

so at this stage Ill be watching Weitering closely

This might be an indication as to where Lever (another KPD) would have gone in 2014 had he not done his ACL at the end of the previous year. Another one touted as the #1 pick about a year out. Lever slid down to 14 in the end, but if he was a midfielder or KPF that had torn it up during his underage year and captained Vic Metro, he might have gone top 5 even without having played in his draft year.

I'm not too sure. Lever was an excellent prospect however Weitering is better in almost every regard - he's a higher level intercept mark and better reader of the play, has more runs on the board around the ground, a better outlet kick and a better size - at this stage last year Lever was 192 to Weitering's 195. Lever grew to 193-194 by draft day and I think given Weitering being 17.5 atm and given his record of late growth I think it's possible he gets to 197-200 by next year. That extra inch or two over lever is massive coupled with his broader and more developed body and far superior 1v1 ability that gap between the two is huge, IMO.

It's a long year, Petracca was the clear number 1 for most of 2014- will be interesting to see where he is at in August. Carlton are crying out for a player of his calibure

Petracca was there abouts all year but even Wright spend a good portion of the year as the "definite" #1, not solely Petracca or McCartin

Yes he was. All year it was Petracca, especially during the champs. McCartin only became number 1 by late November. Look at all the media's Phantom drafts throughout the year, Petracca was always there

Agree to disagree. Petracca started the year as a top 15 pick as there were still some question marks over his ability to perform as a pure mid. As the champs began however he quickly quashed those concerns and as a result started rocketing up the rankings respectively.
Inside football had him at pick 13 as of may 2014, Paige Cardrona had him at 4 as of June 2014 just to name a couple.
It rotated depending on who you spoke to between Durdin, McCartin, Wright, Brayshaw, even Lever and Goddard were in the discussion amongst recruiters. Hardly the landslide you're conveying.

Paid special attention to him today. WA had to move Smith into defense to play on Schache and Weitering is just freakish when given less responsibility. Collins, doesn't look bad either. Those three Vic Country boys are the biggest group of talls i've seen at the champs in one year.

Yeah it's ridiculous, especially when you consider that they've got skinner up their sleeve who's just as good as Collins down back but more as a #1 defender, McKay who's a top 40 tall and Hearn who's very draftable too.

Best batch of talls I've seen come through from a region in a year, without question.
