So apparently he's out of contract at the end of the year...

What's your contract status?

Out at the end of the year. But I take it a week at a time. I reckon you're in charge of your own future so as long as you go out each week, put your head over the ball and do the hard things, it should look after itself. The boys - Craig Cameron and Dimma - have already said they like me around and they said keep working, the time will come and we'll talk then. I would love to get another couple of years.

Is anyone not convinced that he belongs on the list for another few years? I reckon he's earned a 2 year deal with what he's shown in the last ten games or so.

And yes, I realise there's a lot of footy to be played this season, but if the decision had to be made right now..he deserves another 2 years.

Yep, 2 years is about right. 3 years is too long and 1 year is not fair to the bloke. No reason why we can't wait until mid to end of year to do this deal though...

I agree, I wouldn't be making the call for a few months yet...I'm just asking based on his current form.

I loved this bit the most from Robbo.

Yesterday, Martin went body-on-body with one of the strongest upper-body players in the league, Michael Firrito, and ragged-dolled him several times. Two weeks back, Martin ''don't argued'' an entire pack of players. Hint: When someone argues Martin is the best young player to come to the Tigers in 20 years, well, don't argue back.

Yep, had a chuckle about that too Bazz. Funny part is that he did the same thing twice to Thompson also, who most would rate their best KPD. Astounded he didn't play on Jack. Scott too proud to admit he ****ed up the match-up from the start?

People on here keep listing King amongst our list of 'short people' when referring to guys like Nahas and Nason. I just don't get that. Fine, he is short, but he actually goes alright overhead down forward (admittedly he struggled in that area in the past when in defense), when he plays in front. He also plays 5-10kg above his weight in a contested situation, it's not like he gets knocked off the ball. He also provides a good option on the lead when we are delivering inside 50 at times.

I like his 2008 year, but hated his 2009. Now I'm starting to think that 2009 was the glitch. Would get a game for Collingwood ahead of Krakouer on current form (keeping in mind he'd seem at least a 10% better player in that team).

Averaging 2 goals a game, if he finishes the year with 35+ should get a 2 year deal. Since you know that he will deliver in the other key area for which he is currently selected, ie. fwd pressure. Needs to stay on the park also, no reports this year.

3000k you are joking.
2000k would be fine nd if he wants more don't let the door hit you on the way out.
$300k is the average salary for an AFL player once you take out fixed contracts for draftees. Given he's a starting 18 player, one of the longest servants at the club and having one of his best seasons, I'd say that's about right. We are forced to play our older players more to reach the 92.5% minimum TPP.

Exactly- $250k is the average salary of listed players these days so to say we shouldn't pay Jake a little over average is a stretch- I'm sure a club like GC or GWS would love to pay a bargain price like that for a presence like his.

But as others have said, let's wait until at least mid season before we decide

How much would GC be paying for Campbell Brown? $500k? If GWS want an experienced angry ant ala Brown, then King may be on their list. If he keeps playing like he has been playing he is worth $300k. $200k would be a slap in the face.

Is it possible to give him the presidency? That guy bleeds yellow and black! I'm joking re the presidency.... but he just puts his body and soul out there for everyone to see every week.... An inspiration to the rest of them!!!

And this is the very reason you hang on to a guy like him. His skills are getting better as well. 2 years, 300K...

He's worth 2 years right now, but as someone else said, he's the sort of guy you'd wait until later on in the season before you resigned him.
Absolutely good on him though for getting the best out of himself, there are far more talented guys out there but few work as hard as Jake does.
Has earnt his spot in the 22.

I would be tempted to do the same thing with King as they are rumoured to have done with Tuck, sign him on a 1 year deal with the option of a further year as long as he meets certain goals.

Tuck is 29 and has been in the system for 11 years, 7 of those he would have been paid pretty well (3 top 3 b&fs and a good level of consistency in a poor team means that he probably would have met any and all incentive targets and been paid circa $400-500k a year). This may be his last year, if not then next year is likely. Has been critized for not doing the team things in the past and although he is still a solid player, he is not the "leader type" that will see him getting games even if his form tapers off.

King is 27 and has only been in the system for 5 years. My guess is that for 3 of those years at least he was on minimum. I doubt he is on much more than that now. He has worked his way from fringe player to one of the first picked. Being a late starter, he may well have 5 years left in him. He is the ultimate team player and is highly regarded by the playing group and coach.

King deserves a decent 2 year contract. Otherwise we may see him walk. Comparing Tuck's 1 year contract to what King should get is absurd.

As good as King as been the past 12 games, at this stage I wouldn't be inclined to lock ourselves into 2 years on decent money, especially with free agency coming in at the end of next season. Would much rather have some flexibility just in case. However, if we were to give him 2 years then make it at lower money and add a heap of bonuses for meeting certain targets. I'd still be inclined to add the option clause as well just to keep Kingy hungry as he strikes me as someone who performs better when he has everything to lose.

I'd be happy with the bonuses situation, but I am not comfortable with your insinuations regarding his character. Its pretty clear King gives his all week in, week out. Hes not a "contract renewal specialist" like Gaspar ;)
