Oppo Camp James Aish (Traded to Freo 2019)

Me. His numbers are average for someone of his ability. Guys that work hard enough are involved consistently throughout games, IMO, and he isn't currently ala WHE. You could learn a lot from the concept of tough love.

We were right to trade him in, we won't be trading him out and he needs to do more. Its really that simple.

Spot on.
He showed late last year what he is capable of but not sure his work rate what it could be.
I have been watching him closely and he is winning footy in heavy traffic and the ball hasnt been delivered to him well. He just needs to keep working. Certainly dont think playing him in defence is the answer. He is a victim of it being hard to get into the mid rotation.

Aish is an accumulator he is not an explosive type, not someone who will break a game open. He needs to be super fit and strong and be around the contest feeding it out to the line breakers etc. There has been a misconception that he is an outside type but he is not.

He does most things nicely but nothing is elite. Reminds me a bit of Luke Ball.

The real stuff is all that matters, but I was surprised so many people were won over by Aish on the back of his late season form.
It was much improved, but I wouldn't say it was amazing. Add that to his woeful form at the start of last season, and he is definitely on the fringe of the team. Tom Phillips types will take his spot if he doesn't come good.
I get the feeling we need to find a niche position for him - I think we have better options on the wing, he isn't good enough to play in the middle, backline - can he defend? It helps him find the ball. Forward nope.

So you say Aish is Super Overrated?

In fairness he did have a few really good games. He was marking well, and hitting the scoreboard as well. And these were against good team.

I share the view of a few others here though that he just isn't in our best 10 mids right now, so he needs to forge a role across half back...or dominate in the VFL in the middle until a spot opens.

I don't know if it's his work-rate, but he does seem to be a confidence player. He doesn't like entirely comfortable in his role yet. From all I've heard about Aish, he is a super professional athlete that works really hard. I just think sometimes he holds back to let the more senior guys do the leg work. He just needs the confidence to back himself. I think confidence is linked with work-rate. When you have your confidence up, you go for everything. When it's down, then you don't work as hard because you aren't trusting yourself.

I think he is talented enough to make the grade.

I do get that Feeling Too the he might Respect the Older players to Much as he gives them the Ball Normally IF they are Close. So he needs to Believe bit more in himself at AFL Level. I do think espically at the Moment he is a Confidence Player. Do a Few Good Things Early and he can have a Big Game.

As I said I think he has Big Time Potential it's just a Matter of Hopefully Unlocking it

but you reckon he does not work Hard Enough?

Yep, just because you could work harder does not necessarily mean you're lazy there is grey in the discussion. I bet if you asked Aish how hard he works he'd say bloody hard, but if he and Treloar came to the bench at the same time I guarantee Treloar would be more puffed.

I don't have the solution, and I think its up to Aish to figure it out himself, but if he does he'll come on. Until then though he's no certainty to be in our best 22.

It's difficult. But we're not exactly prospering at the centre clearances. Perhaps Buckley should throw him an opportunity. Problem is he's done nothing to really stick his hand up for it.

Well it could be Bucks does not Rate Aish as Highly as Hine. There where Rumors that Bucks was not Keen on Aish but Hine was and he did the Trade.

I reckon with Aish's Instincts he would help at Ruck Contests

Don't bring those rumours into the discussion. Fact is Aish hasn't really done enough to deserve a guernsey on ball. It would be a leap of faith based on our poor centre clearance performance and Aish's potential; but not his performances to date.

Then that would not be a Great Sign. Though Grundy did not Play RD 1 but seasons end he is 1 of the Best Rucks in the AFL:thumbsu:
He will either earn his spot or not.
What he does have is the ability to sweep through the back half or wing etc.
so more tricks than say smith

Didn't JT get On-Ball time when he came on and He has done nothing for 2 Seasons because of being a Drug Cheat.

Maybe putting some Faith in him might make him play better

Those rumours were garbage Dave. Aish himself said that he made his decision to come to Collingwood after meeting with Buckley. You don't request a trade to a club based off a meeting with a coach who doesn't want you.

Thomas barely got a quarter of game time Dave. He's not the player you want to use as an example when you're claiming lack of opportunity for Aish.

But he had more On-Ball Time then Aish.

What do people think of Blair getting more time then Aish?

I think they were played on ball because they're both far more limited players than Aish and would be useless on the outside.

Honestly Dave, they're not starving Aish of opportunity, they're just playing the players at their disposal in the positions they feel are the most beneficial to the team.

I'd agree Aish should be ahead of both Thomas and Blair for on-ball minutes. I don't think either of those two have been given extensive time there, so it's a bit of a tenuous argument. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but it seems you're searching for an explanation why Aish isn't on ball because you rate Aish so highly yourself; but I think the reality is that Aish hasn't earned that role because he isn't yet performing well enough to justify it. I think it's purely a performance thing to date with with Aish, nothing more sinister.

But How will Prove he be able to play On-Ball when playing on the Flanks mostly?

If he's not in the seniors round 1, could be as simple as there are 22 players ahead of him all things considered
Of course.. but I'll use the Wellingham example agst North a few yrs back where we had Swan and Pendlebury on the sidelines. Malthouse threw Wellingham into the guts and he amased 40 possessions.

It's easy to use your best 22 analogy as a black and white example. It's a lot more deepseated than that in my opinion.

Dave, I reckon you are 100% right, and was very much what I was trying to say.

Sometimes he just takes a very easy option or handballs to someone more experiences, when at times he could take the initiative himself.

I reckon he works hard, and I've never seen him shirk a contest. He has taken some great marks and he puts his head over it. It's more about having the self confidence to run that extra yard or leave his man, or back himself to take on the workload.

I think he is in his head a lot. He wants to do the right thing all the time, but sometimes he needs to take more risks.

I like him a lot and reckon he is going to develop nicely.

If you compare his late season form to his early season, it shows how far he came in 1 year. The only issue is that I was hoping he would have a super pre-season and cement himself in the best 22. He seems to have stagnated.

Well I guess we not seen a Improvement since end of last season is True at the Moment. As you never heard about Aish during Pre-Season Reports.

Though started to do some good things in the 4th Qtr. So Hopefully that gets him out of the Possible Rut he been over the Pre-Season

From what I saw on saturday he was given a defensive role. He laid some nice tackles and a few times would have to have done something miraculous to stop Freo getting over the top. Not much ball went through his hands as his stats suggest but didn't see him waste it! You wonder what role the coaching staff has in mind for him. Personally speaking he does his best work around the contest and can snap a goal in blink of an eye. He is a pure midfielder inside or outside take your pick but for now while he develops his body strength Id play him as attacking flanker.

100% Agree Aish does not waste many Touches with the Ball. Which other Players have Been Guilty Of.

I agree he is a Purer Mid but Looks like Club is Sending him Back for most likely learn a bit Defensive Side of the Game but I agree he is better Attacking then Defending
