I'd be happy with a Bartel - Haynes swap.

Haynes doesn't fit in our side - he's definately not the answer at FF and doesn't cut it on a flank IMO.

Bartel would need to step up to make a regular in our midfield, but he'd be worth more to us than Haynes.

:D All true though.

I am not a huge rap for Jimmy, but i will be disappointed if we lose him.

Young midfielders of his quality don't come along often.

I agree it would have to be a straight swap or don't bother. We don't need Bartel IMO. I'd rather keep Haynes, we can't trade away ALL of our flankers.

Bartel for Haynes would be a plus for the Eagles IMO, Haynes is sloppy and inconsistent while Bartel is an up and comer that with the right training can only get better.

Haynes for another midfielder will not hurt us as much as a more definitive KPP player would, because Haynes is definately not our answer at Full-Forward and can be replaced easily.

So in conclusion, Bartel for Haynes would be a go-getter in the eagles favour if it were to eventuate.

oh haynes for bartel ...how sweet.

As i said on the trade board the eagles considered Bartel to be as good if not better than sampi, but was a victorian so Sampi was choosen.

It was common knowledge that the eagles were extremely keen..and this really does not suprise that they want him now.

You had me sold until that .... we really need to be attracting a Josh Carr clone, this makes Bartel sound like what we already have... but...

Will Haynes get much better? IMO, he had AMPLE opportunity to show us this season. he was given, what 18 rounds at FF? And there was plenty of supply, yet little return? And even if you are advocating moving him to a flank ... we have Staker, Sampi, Jones, Matera who will fill those roles off the top of my head.

And then there is my big push to move Chris Judd to an attacking half forward flank role as seen on TV (Brisbane game), which is feasible if we get a midfield replacement.

Say hello to James Bartel.

i love you Freo guys, you get an idea, run with and stick to it :)

Thegur is correct ,Bartel has value to the club by what he is able to free up :

like either Embley or Judd as a permanent HFF

you must look beyond the trade and be able to see how the change impacts on the team structure.

This is win win for us.

Bartel straight up for Haynes.....Done. Start wanting draft picks etc, no thanks.

I still think Haynes can be a part of our side, not at FF but as a third tall in the forward line. Still has the best lead at the club but Bartel is a good player so I would do it straight up. If Geelong wanted more, Im happy to persist with Haynes.

The question that has to be asked also is that he wants to leave to get first team football. Will he get that at WC? Cousins, Fletcher, Kerr and Judd are walk up starts in our midfield. Braun after his really strong second half of the season will no doubt be in the side come Round 1. Then you have Chick, Jones, Banfield, Chambers, talk of Wirrpunda and Sampi being moved into midfield. Of course Embley on a wing, where will Bartel fit in?

Bartel could definitely squeeze into our side. If Haynes played 18 games, and we get rid of him, there are spots to fill.

While our obvious weakness is our spine at the moment, there is no harm in making sure our midfield stocks are replenished often. If Bartel has the ability to become a future star for the next 10 years, we should take him.

I still think we have room for him, if we start rotating players forward more. Most of us agree that guys like - Chick, Judd, Cousins, Embley and Chambers, make excellent 'pinch hitters' across HF. That's what we have, attacking midfielders, so i wouldn't see a problem fitting another player into our midfield, assuming the rotation is kept.

And do i have to mention the injuries? it would have been handy to have had a replacement for Fletch or Embers when they went down.

True, but we need a clubman and Brauny is an Eagle through and through.

I was wondering if anyone was going to bite... I was just fishing to see what would happen and have a little bit of fun...Hope no offence is to be had...

It is obvious that I have adifferent opinon on Braun to other people in this forum and that too is ok....

Haven't seen enough of Bartel to comment, but Haynes (IMO) is tradeable for the right option. May work well especially if Woosha thinks he can get something out of Bartel that Thompson has failed to.

How long has Thompson been at Geelong now? It seems ages for no demonstrable improvement. Is he under pressure?

I think you will find that Bartel isnt keen on leaving Victoria and a club with navy blue and a white insignia have been into him midseason. Geelong are supposed to have offered a standard contract deal to all their talented youngsters out of contract but Bartel was the only one who wouldnt sign, game time and to a lesser extent money are the major factors in his wanting out. I dont see him getting the game time at the eagles.

I think part of the reason Eagle fans don't rate Bartel is because he has never played well against us. He isn't quick, is a defensive liability and his kicking is iffy at times. No doubt he has talent but we would be taking a risk giving up any high picks for him. Don't mind us trading players like Haynes for him though, who could thrive at Geelong. It could be one of those rare win/win situations.

We do want to hold on to him. An offer has been on the table for months.

Bartel is unhappy because of his lack of opportunities, thus wants to go to a club who can guarantee him a midfield role.

His ball-winning ability is superb, he reads the play extremely well, and his kicking is special, however he doesn't do enough on the defensive side of the ball.

If he could work a bit harder, i have no doubt that he'd become a top 10 midfielder.

if he cant get a game in the midfield at geelong, how is he gonna get a game in our midfield? he may break in occassionally (with injuries), but he definitely wouldnt be GUARANTEED a game...doesnt really make sense to me that he wants to go to a club where he can play in the midfield, so he leaves a club with an average midfield and goes to a club with potentially the best midfield in the comp...please explain???

I would be happy with a straight Bartel - Haynes swap. It would also cause a problem with Chambers, Adkins and Wooden all in the midfield loop - surely we would have to try and trade or cut one of them?
