I can handle the first two, but the last one is plain wrong.

He is one of the best kicks going around, SUPERB skills.

if he cant get a game in the midfield at geelong, how is he gonna get a game in our midfield?

Horribly simplistic view.

BTW Since when has Bartel been inable to get a game at Geelong?

he wants to go to a club where he can play in the midfield, so he leaves a club with an average midfield and goes to a club with potentially the best midfield in the comp...please explain???

That average midfield has managed to beat or break even with the apparent best midfield in the league three or four times in a row.

Our midfield lacks star quality, but a quick look at Eagles/Cats games would show you that the gap between the two is minimal.

I think the gap is much more than minimal, it's just that your midfield matches up really well against ours but oin general our midfield is quite a lot better than yours.

P&P...I also wanted to know if Thompson is under any pressure. VOR asked the question and you would know more about it than anyone else on our boards. As VOR said, Thompson has been there for quite some time for minimal results?

I agree that, in general, his skills are quite good but there are times he panics and turns the ball over. Maybe its more a lack of confidence.

Is this his brother?

Josh Bartel Murray Bushrangers Apr 23, 85 191 cm 75 kg

Medium, outside midfielder who is a long, accurate kick and always uses the ball well. Presents well when up forward. From Wodonga FC.

I'm a HUGE fan of Jimmy Bartel (See the avatar) and will be absolutely devestated when he is traded (I have pretty much resigned myself to the fact that it's an inevitable event :()

I can tell you now, trading David Haynes in exchange for James Bartel would be an absolute steal for the West Coast Eagles. Haynes didn't impress me at all in that horrible draw down at Skilled, although to be fair, he was up against the best full back in the comp. Even so, he was completely out-classed and annihilated. Geelong don't need another average forward, we have recycled and tried plenty - See Spinks, Kingsley, Mooney and White. And I don't think it's unfair to label Haynes as an average forward, after all... if he was any good, he would have actually competed against Scarlo ;)

James Bartel is the kind of player Geelong are desperately searching for - a strong leader, and potential championship material. Would definitely Captain the side (Perhaps Ling would be the only challenger) in a couple of years if it wasn't for his departure. And yes, you may ask the question, "Why on earth are Geelong keen to trade him then?" And as P&P has outlined, the contract has been on the table for the last few months, however Bartel has refused to sign. Supposedly it's due to a lack of opportunities, although I find that incredibly hard to believe.

I'd be extremely happy with the suggested trade of Haynes for Bartel as an Eagles supporter. However sadly, I am a Geelong supporter, and as a Geelong supporter, it would be a very, very sad day to see such a trade eventuate :(

Me and a couple of mates saw Haynes, Hunter and a couple of other Eagle players on Wednesday night, and one of my mates was talking to Haynes' girlfriend... and she said in so many words that they don't expect to be in Perth next year.

We would be better off without him IMO. Woosha might have finally realized he's not our next FF.

Especially if you managed to acquire Jimmy's services.

Continue to underrate our midfield, one day it will bite you on the arse.

No doubting we don't have the stars that other clubs do, but depth wise, we are up there with the best.

Plenty of pressure on him, but he will finish his contract.

Has apparently agreed to hand over the reins to Gary O'Donnell (who will sign within the next two weeks) at the end of 2004.

Is that under the condition Thommo fails, if so... What a joke of a contract, how many loop holes would there be for one thing?

Also, wouldn't we want O'Donnell to be a supportive and productive assistant coach, surely if a job was waiting in the wings for him he would be against Thommo succeeding?

u sed he wanted to leave geelong becoz of a lack of opportunity in the midfield...of course its simple... he has a lack of opportunity in the midfield at geelong, he will have a lack of opportunity in the midfield at a club whose midfield is BETTER than geelong's (despite your ignorance).

i actually wouldnt mind the trade...he'd be good backup, but according to the info posted in this thread, HE wants more opportunities, barring injury to any of our guns he would get more opportunities to play in the weaker geelong midfield.

That average midfield has managed to beat or break even with the apparent best midfield in the league three or four times in a row.

Horribly simplistic view...u match up well against us, i agree, but by your own admission u have stated our midfield is SLIGHTLY better than yours (i disagree, i think we **** on yours, but anyway...) hence my original question: how will Bartel get more opp's in our midfield?

Where were you?

Sorry, don't rate Bartel that much.

Haynes has been good this year whereas Bartel has been up and down in and out. Bartel is younger (and drafted higher - not by much) but Haynes is a young tall forward and they don't grow on trees. I can see why you'd want him playing next to Rawlings next year ;) They'd go alright I reckon.
Agreed. The last thing we need is more mids.
