To be fair, while he did struggle with injury he did clock off in his latter years what with his budding journalism career, modelling and CLEO Bachelor of the Year nominations.

You've got to be 110% dedicated to succeed at AFL level and he wasn't.

Doesn't seem to be stopping Brodie Holland at the moment.

Begley had a lot of talent, and it was disappointing for me to see injuries bring about his downfall.

He had one first half of a season that was fantastic, unfortunatly he got injured, which was the story of his career.

And DT, 100% is by definition the most anyone can give.

pfft, If running 100 meters in 10 seconds is 100%, then what % is it when you do it in 9 seconds?

BTW thanks for the link stripes:thumbsu:
I like Begleys girlfriend analogy.

Yes he certainly did, Tim Watson even went so far as to declare him a future captain of St. Kilda at one stage.

I see parallels with the career of Kris Massie, massive potential curtailed by injury, but whereas Kris has continued to fight on and stay 110% committed to his footy in spite of all the setbacks, Begley veered off and chose to lay foundations in other areas.

Now of course there's nothing inherently wrong with that, it is refreshing to see a footballer actually planning for life after footy - but if you are to succeed in the face of such adversity you have to give it everything. James perhaps saw the writing on the wall and diversified.

And DT, 100% is by definition the most anyone can give.

Got a nice nail polish for those claws? ;) :thumbsu:

I was disappointed when he left St Kilda. He came the same year as Lenny Hayes (or thereabouts), and I always saw those two coming through together.

He seemed like a pretty cluey bloke - maybe once injury etc started interfering he got, not bored, but more itchy for other options.

At least he didn't resort to dunking his head in the Ganges like the other guy in the story :p

If you can do it faster than 10 seconds, it means you've put in less than 100% if you did it in 10 (theoretically anyway) :p

That's an ill-informed dumb comment, Dyertribe. You've let yourself down.

"Ill-informed" and "dumb"?

Care to further enlighten me as to exactly why, Professor Kingsmill?

Nowhere near the class of "We're off to see the spoon" when Craigy was first selected.

Close, it was actually "We're off to win the wooden" - the alliteration makes it. Just rolls off the tongue.

That photoshop was p#sspoor I might add, will have to do a retro reload.

Cheers DT the alliteration is much better, I admit.
My poor old memory is failing me a bit these days...

EDIT: although 'see the spoon'? "win the wooden'? both alliterations of sorts

What was it? Groin strain, three dislocated shoulders, dislocated thumb, back and hip problems...

James Begley put his body and his heart on the line to play football.

You can question whether he had the right sort of body for AFL but only an ill-informed dumb fool would question this man's commitment.

Do the decent thing and retract your cowardly slur.

John, totally off topic here (and BTW I agree questioning Begley's commitment seems fairly harsh), but I'd heard the Review is looking at upping the ante a bit and perhaps coming out weekly, possibly even daily long-term. Any whispers in the corridors?

That was how the corporate plan was presented three years ago... but... well... we're realists at the Review.

Exactly, body just wasn't up to it.

Ah well, fingers crossed, I guess. I'd love to see a bit of genuine competition for the Advertiser. Seems the Independent Weekly has really struggled - but I'm sure they'd claim they're catering for the niche market they'd targeted from the outset.

It obviously needs someone with the money - and the cojones - to take on News Ltd. Your Spanish billionaire (or whatever he is) seems to fit the description.

Wow. I've just reviewed this thread, and I'm not sure I labelled Begley a "softc#ck", insinuated he drove a purple commodore or that he could be one of the urine sample triad.

John, I realise that you take your fledgling journalistic career oh-so-seriously, but do you have to be full of such pompous proclamations? (I'd cite your original BigFooty-related article in the Review where you said "JohnK lost his way" as evidence, but I fear the Messenger takes pride of place in my collection and I'm not sure I have said fish and chip wrapping on file).

On the rare occasions you do grace us with your majestic presence - and take umbrage at something that has been said - you're all about "retracting slurs/statements" and generally carrying on like the Opposition Whip at Question Time.

If you'd actually bothered to read my posts at face value instead of firing off an email to Bart Cummings to saddle up the high horse, you'd have taken my comment on commitment for what it was - not some sort of "cowardly slur" on his character, but that he was increasingly keen on other career paths which inturn reduced his drive to continue playing the game at the highest level.

No doubt the injuries would've contributed to this, but he wasn't the first player to suffer a raft of serious setbacks and he won't be the last.

If you don't think Begley had one eye on the inevitable sunrise in those last couple of years you're being foolishly simplistic.

How do you know that?

I know James Begley and if that's not a slur on his character I don't know what is.

You can say what you like about me, Dyertribe, but I am not the issue here.

I repeat. Begley was totally committed to his football and your comment shows that you simply don't know what you are talking about.

How is saying that he had clear interests outside football which lessened his drive to play the game a "slur on his character"?

You're just attention seeking now, John.

You can say what you like about me, Dyertribe, but I am not the issue here.

You made yourself the issue, who else are you going to namedrop?

I repeat. Begley was totally committed to his football and your comment shows that you simply don't know what you are talking about.

How do you know that? Did he tell you personally? Did you study him closely?

You made the statement:

"You've got to be 110% dedicated to succeed at AFL level and he wasn't."

You are now dancing on a pin.

Put up your reasons for this statement or shut up.

Review the thread John, it's all there.

Perhaps if you'd actually bothered to read what I'd said instead of riding in blindly like a hero we'd both be better off.

John,

again, your point does follow from your premise. I have known personally, and professionally, a number of elite, professional athletes.

you know what, every one of them would swear on grandma bessie's grave they gave it all they had. the thing is, in some cases in wasn't even remotely true. they believed it, got upset if anyone suggested otherwise, but really they didn't know what it took, or what someone was really doing.

the real issue is, why should anyone want something more than they do?
the average supporter would gnaw off his arm to play footy professionally, but that's because they can't, and they don't know what's involved. Of course those people in the hot house will have different perspectives, because theirs is real.

why would that offend you?
