Some might say this thread is surperfulous. If the mods agree no doubt it will go or be merged. I think it is important enough to stand alone.

I would like to express my personal admiration for James Hird, in taking on as an individual the most significant personal and public penalty from this whole affair, abandoning his rights to justice before the law and presumption of innocence, and taking the heat almost daily from the media - which included intrusion into his privacy and that of his family.

There is no doubt there are things he could have done better and that he shares some responsibility for what has taken place. But to be the only party that is significantly penalized - that includes the CEO, the heads of football, and the fitness staff of the club - by the AFL commission is absurd.

That he has done so in order for the issues to be put to rest and to allow the game itself to move on is, as Burnside said, nothing less than heroic.

Would you, knowing that you have made some mistakes of omission, but without malice or deliberate intent, accept such a punishment instead of defending yourself by the law? I doubt few could say they would.

To put the interests of the football public, the clubs of the league, the players, and some culpable members of the Essendon football club ahead of his own personal right to justice is significant and should be properly recognised.

We can have a proper finals series now and the club and players can move on to next year. Because Hird caved in to the AFLs need for a scalp. I will not forget this, I'm sure the players at Essendon will not forget this. But I doubt he will ever get the proper wider recognition for doing this, so I am asserting it here.

Great post, nothing more I need to add :thumbsu:

It is very disappointing to see a mistake made costs you time. The bloke will always be a champion. Best part is he will be back!

He should have told the AFL to get ****ed and proceeded with court action. However, he took the interests of his players and the fans to heart and just ended this mess. Yes he is a human and made some bad mistakes at the club, but he is just that, a human. As much as we like to believe he is perfect, he made mistakes, and he took responsibility for them. Can't wait for him to return next year, him lifting up #17 will haunt Caro, Vlad, Fatprick, Ralph and the foamers forever :thumbsu:

He'll be back soon, he is still relatively young and will coach this team for years to come once he returns.

As the senior coach, you need to protect the players. By copping the brunt of the penalties he has fulfilled his role.

This is something I was worried he wasn't going to do.

Is it fair, probably not, but any good carer takes the obvious bullet for their young.

It's the one that sneak in and manipulate behind the scenes that are the ones often causing mistakes.

Generally in life it could be your kids friends or partners, but in the case of the bombers, it was Stephen Dank.

Excellent OP.

The crucial change was that the AFL acknowledged that neither the club nor any of the individuals charged set out to implement a supplements program that would result in players being administered prohibited or potentially harmful substances. The starting point for so much of the hysterical media coverage has been the presumption of callous disregard for the players' welfare. Had the AFL not backed down on that point, we'd still be heading to court.

Brilliant post lamaros

It's why he is a living legend of the club. Denies himself natural justice for the good of the club.

Opposition supporters will be shocked that so many of us will stand by him until hell freezes over, but it is actions like this that prove he puts the club and it's welfare ahead of himself that have endeared him to us over the past 22 years.

Oh yeah, Caro's look of surprise closely followed by contemptuous disgust when she learned about the contract extension was nothing short of priceless. Suck on it long and hard you sour old bitch.

you knew he'd do it, loves the club too much, and if the AFL wanted his head on a pike for whatever reason, then he'd give it to them.

Burnside summed it up pretty well last night.

If anything my respect for him has actually grown through all this

Didn't think it was possible but my man love for Hird has grown.

The media have tried to destroy Hird. Well in the eyes of Bomber fans he has grown even bigger.

Well done Caro and co you have created a monster.

Countdown to Hird - 362 Days and counting.

Yea, Jack, you said pretty much what I think.
I thought Burnside spoke very well and summed it up pretty clearly. If anybody hasn't seen it yet, I recommend his radio interview as a "must hear".

I have always admired Hird, strangely not so much for his onfield deeds, but as a person.
The way he has conducted himself throughout this has been superb.
His calmness and his ability to function and push on despite the type of crap Wilson and co. have thrown at him, has, I think, only frustrated the haters that they couldn't bring him down.

A big part of me really wanted him to stick to his guns and go to court, but I reluctantly bow to his wisdom and humility in accepting that, in the end, the AFL had the power and he had to become a sacrificial lamb.

In no way has it diminished his reputation and standing in my eyes and in the eyes and hearts of all Essendon supporters. It just disappointing that so many arseholes in the general public can't (=don't want to) see it the same way.

Hirdy, if you are reading this, head up. We still love you. More than ever. It is easy to show leadership and courage when things are going well, but it takes a very special man to do what Hird has done through the adversity he has had to live with these last 6 months.

I'm with you, Jack, my respect for and admiration of James Hird has only gone up as a result of all this.

There was a point in this saga where, while I never turned against Hirdy, I did start to expect some sort of personal sacrifice from the great man.

He has done that now and as a result I love him more than ever! :hearts:

My blog sports a Countdown to Hird Retirn in glorious red and black as of this morning.
