No we can't.

But you see the difference when in the 3rd quarter, Murphy plays with his momentum heading defensive side so when we lose the ball, players like Rhyce Shaw and Kieren Jack are under immediate pressure. Which means its not so crucial to win the ball - we gamble far to much IMO at stoppages, and it leads to 10 goal wins against the top couple of sides, but also 10 goal losses to poorer sides.

Jamison completely dominated White today. He was step-for-step at every contest.

Well maybe I'm wrong but right now if we don't win the ball we are in trouble if the other team gets it in the backline we can't be a proper contender like that.

Most teams are in trouble if they don't win the ball, so what

Jamison can hold his own against most opponents. Defenders get beaten sometimes - they are players who are against forwards whose goal is go score a goal on you.

But this time last year you wouldn't give Fevola up for him.

Can't have it both ways.

We'll take your admins' judgement over yours.

Thought he was okay but is okay good enough at this level. The entire backline needs a good rebuild thought Ellard and Davies were hard at it but Bower is slow Unco and completely out of touch. Joseph is also struggling thought defense would be the weakness they have been for weeks.
Who is the defensive coach.

Lloyd said this year that he's the best defensive player in the competition so I'll take his opinion on the issue. While it would be great if he could rebound a bit more I'll take one straight out stopper in the backline. Having said that I do think for a period this year he was down slightly on last year.

Hopefully Bower can have a big pre-season because his form was by far the bigger concern.

Ridiculous thread. Jamo hasn't been in the best form, but was great today, against a much bigger opponent, in a final. Everyone knows that Bower has been in poor form, and injury has destroyed his season, but he played pretty well in the second half today. We need a big-bodied CHB, but Jamo and Bower will still be in the team.

I thought Jammo was ok, needs to put more muscle on and provide a bit more run like he did in the second half to become elite, Bower is the concern

Last year he was injuried quite a bit... Hence he was touted with the dirty "P" word.

This year he played most of the season so was this the "Potential" we wanted to see...

Hopefully he grows in size and statue needs some more mongrel...

The "P" word taints a lot of KP like Austin.

It seems they are better players when they are not playing.????

He was ordinary in the first half but was great in the second.

Bower struggled but is really lacking confidence. I dont think many people realize how much confidence or a lack of it can influence a players performance. He will be better next year.

Agree with this post.

I knocked Jammo in the middle of the year but his last few have been good. Has plenty to offer in coming years.

Agree also that Bower is lacking confidence and this is what showed over the last few weeks. I think he will also develop so wouldn't be worried long term.

I said last week our backline lacked an experienced cool head and wanted Thornton in the team. I went to the game and believe if he'd been there we win it. Obviously he is well out of favor and will go but I think we have missed an opportunity to maximise our return for him by playing him in the Ants when our senior backline is dysfunctional. Not forgetting to mention that we could have won that game with him.

In my view the big difference between us and the Swans was the backline, theirs is mature, experienced and confident and they made life difficult for our forwards, ours lack all those traits at the moment.

I am starting to think that, if we can't trade for a good backman we should take a serious look at Irish there, he would at least throw some weight around and his disposal wouldn't be any worse than we've been seeing

How true this is

He has gone backwards for some reason. He used to be able to keep up with the leading forwards very well.

His first 20 AFL games is definitely better than his last 20 games.

Lloyd said this year that he's the best defensive player in the competition so I'll take his opinion on the issue.

No, what he actually said was Jamo was the best spoiler he'd played on. Thats a good wrap but there's alot more to defense in AFL these days than just bringing the ball to ground. Really thought he'd hold down full back for the next decade last year, now I'm not so sure.

But yeah as others have said, Bower is the bigger worry. He can play tall when required, but he's simply not a key position defender and we need one desperately. I do like how he tries to take them game on, you need those sort of players, but his decision making means it can look pretty bad at times.

Joseph is another defender who seems to have gone backwards this year.

Same could be said about Murphy's previous 20 games in compared to his latest 20. Doesn't mean too much - It's how they rebound that counts.

Jamo was fine from watching it at the game. Made the right decisions to often draw the player closer to him which could be mistaken for panicing. Defended well 1 on 1 when the ball was coming in at a rate of knots...

Dumb thread.

Laughable to say Jamison and Bower aren't quick.

Kept pace with Fevola of all people in round two.

You should have bagged Jamison after he kept Riewoldt and Fevola to a total of 7 goals in three games. Jamison pantsed Koschitzke who troubled Scarlett before the rain came down. IIRC, Jamison played well on Tippett in round four. Jamison is our Prestigiacomo who has been a no thrills rock at full back with the Pies.

Even though Austin won't be a star, I still rate his ability, size, athleticism and talents. With a full pre-season, Oz could easily come on and play a similar role to Ben Reid at CHB, In the second half of the year, Reid has gone from being unfairly rated as a muppet to a gun. Unlike Jamo and Bower, Austin has massive quads, but still needs to fill out in the upper body. Oz wouldn't have done many weights due to the broken wrist he had in the pre-season.

Has some upside plus ability.

Our backline needs to work more as a team.

We don't see a third man up coming across to spoil like we see with the top teams. Bower could have pushed back harder to help out Jamison twice, but was worrying about his own man.

This.

We gamble WAY too much. The way football is thesedays midfielders need to be a little bit more reactive then players in other positions. Our boys are excessively PROactive and tend to start running forward soon as they THINK we will win a contest. Instead Judd handballs it to Scotland who leaves it behind for his Sydney opponent and our boys have already run 40 metres ahead of the play. Goal Sydney. That is the reason why we work so hard for every goal yet our opponents seem to get them quite easy.

In the second half of Sundays game our midfielders concentrated on securing the footy and protecting the ball carrier 1st and running ahead of the play ONLY when we had secured possesion. You cant take shortcuts on the footy field as a midfielder.

Panic? You serious?

He was one of our better defenders today, smashed White...
he did, but he does get outmuscled by big gorillas too often. carltons` whole backline needs to put on muscle over summer, otherwise it will keep on happening.

I would argue that all 3 of Thornton, Jamison and Bower regressed somewhat this year.

Thornton went from a staple to (surely) tradebait. I think he's gone. I know for a fact Sticks and Swann aren't fans.

Jamison battled manfully, but got exposed a few times. Definitely the best of these 3 this year, and needs to just keep working, keep getting stronger. Should be fine.

Bower had a shocker. Injuries and his confidence utterly shattered. But this guy is a genuine talent, I think. More talented than the other two. Needs muscle, fitness and a good run with injuries, and he's quite a unique player. Would kill it NOT playing a key post, surely.

These three struggling this year has made it abundantly clear putting a true #1 defender into our lineup would have a massive knock-on effect. Recall the talk about Brian Lake a year back? Just IMAGINE the impact he would have had in our backline. Wow. Someone to take the gorillas, and own the zone, and be third man up, and provide run and link. Sigh. Not to be.

I think Richmond have an over-abundance of young tall defenders... Thursfield anyone? We need to set our sights on what's realistic here.

This thread is ridiculous. From the stands Jamo looked very good yesterday against a bigger opponent in White. He spoiled well and did well at ground level.

Thornton is gone. I can't see him playing another game for the Carlton Football Club

Bower has had a disappointing year compared to what most people would have expected. Last year he was amazing, especially because he played the last half of the year carrying an injury and with Jamo and Waite out. This year I think he was just a bit stop and start with his injury problems in the first half of the year which have affected his performances this year as he couldn't get any consistency. I still see him as a vital part of our team as he is able to play on the bigger mobile players and is a very good link up player out of the backline and disposes of the ball well. Hopefully he can put this year behind him and take a few steps forward in 2011.
