His party was smashed in upper house elections, 4 Cabinet ministers have been forced to resign over various scandals, and he vowed that if he couldn't convince the parliament to extend Japan's support for US military operations in Afghanistan, he'd call it quits. Well, he was going to get caned by the Democratic Party over it and he pulled the plug.
