With the axing of Grant Thomas, one wonders what will happen with Misfud as an assistant who Thomas bought in this season !? Prior to him getting appointed under Thomas he was appointed playing coach of Hamilton in the wbfl.
  • Will Hamilton renew there chase for him !? (stupid not to !)
  • Interest from other country clubs i'm sure will gather
  • Is he good enough to stay in the afl system !?

He can come and Coach Lalbert

He might be able to return to Hamilton as they have parted ways with Glen Doyle who took the job on when Mifsud left.

From Hamilton Spectator:

By CODY WINNELL

HAMILTON Football Netball Club will look to regurgitate a proven match-winning attitude in time for the 2007 Western Border Football League season.

The incoming president, Barry Pollock, and incoming vice-president, Simon Cullinane, are expected to take over the reins of the club at the Magpies' annual general meeting, which is to be held in November.

Cullinane, who was president when the club won the senior premiership in 2004, said the first step in lifting the black and white back up the ladder was re-signing current key seniors.

Cullinane said the club had already secured the services of Damien Logan, Phil Currie, Tim Robertson, Brian McGinley, Lachie Crawford, Brendan Huf, Dion Rhook, David McIntosh and Troy Kenny for 2007.

The club is still negotiating with this year's gun recruit, Joe Kenna.

"The main concern was signing up this senior core of players, now we can work on the rest of the guys.

"The reserves are very important to us, to be successful in the ones we need a full squad of seconds players to pick from every week. It gives us depth.

"It means we won't be constantly calling on under-18s to fill holes in the seniors every second week. The under-18s are about development but if the kids are good enough to be in the seniors they will continue to get their chances."

Cullinane made the return to a senior executive position at the club after he was approached by Pollock.

"I finished at the end of 2004 but I was involved with recruiting up until March 2005, that's when I was last involved at Hamilton," Cullinane said.

The reason Cullinane walked away from being involved at that time was he and his wife, Lindy, had just had another baby, Sam.

"Barry asked me if I'd take on the role of vice-president under him and I said I'd love to."

At the beginning of this season Hamilton lost 41 senior-type players mainly due to work commitments.

It meant that the incoming coach, Glenn Doyle, who was Jason Mifsud's replacement after the latter, who had signed as Hamilton coach, decided to pursue an AFL coaching career with St Kilda, had an enormous problem on his hands.

"He didn't have a lot of luck," Cullinane admitted.

"I like the guy. He's a quality person and there's no doubt he can play football.

"It's just under certain circumstances the club wanted to go in a different direction next year.

"If he doesn't decide to enter into a senior coaching role somewhere else then he'd be fantastic to have at the club next year as a key player.

"I'd like to have the bloke around."

Like before the 2004 season, Cullinane said that just as important as getting quality footballers to the club - was getting 'quality blokes'.

"That's always been the way, you want quality guys.

"We're going to put a lot of resources into tracking down good quality types for next year.

"Tayls (former Hamilton premiership-winning coach Simon Taylor) is in Melbourne keeping an eye out for us for quality players.

"And Bill (former coach Bill Picken) is also working closely with the club.

"We've got a great network of guys that we are constantly tapping into."

There's no shying away from the fact it's going to be a long, hard road at Hamilton, Cullinane happy to freely admit that.

But Cullinane said it was important to move in the right direction, as professionalism at the top flows right down through to the juniors.

A big step for Hamilton in 2007 will be getting more commitment from the players. This year it's been reported that Hamilton's training attendances have been down on average.

They're far lower than 2004, when not only the seniors trained regularly - but the bulk of the reserves also.

"It's all about getting a commitment from the guys who want to be there, that's why we want good quality blokes around the club.

"It's also why it's so important to get the senior core which has already committed to remain on side.

"That's going to help in terms of recruiting not only players but also securing a top-notch senior coach."

Cullinane said the bottom line behind signing so many senior players so early in the piece was he "didn't want to spend the next four months recruiting our own players".

Along with Pollock and Cullinane Hamilton also has secured the services of Dale Templeton, who will step in as Junior Development Officer as well as Football Operations Manager.

"He's got so much respect and such a great hold on the young kids around the town.

"He put his hand up and said he'd love to do it. It's going to be great to have him there."

Cullinane also said Hamilton would gain Carol Russell as Director of General Administration.

"Her experience is fantastic.

"What we've got at the top is as good as you'd get anywhere."

The Pies' current president, Ashley Crow, will continue at Hamilton, Cullinane saying he was working closely with the incoming president and vice-president to ensure a smooth changeover.

"He's still really busy at the moment with seven out of our 10 sides playing in finals and of course the under-18s haven't lost a game.

"So there's still a fair bit on.

"But Crowy's working closely with us and will continue to do so."

Hamilton's 2006 captain, Crawford, has, as mentioned, signed again with the Magpies. While he's no guarantee to be captain in 2007 - he's a "pretty good candidate" according to Cullinane.

"He's been fantastic this year, but saying that, it comes down to the coach, the assistant coach and the playing group - so it won't be decided until next year."

Currently, according to Cullinane, the mood around the club is one of "excitement and optimism".

"Nobody is happy with finishing in August.

"The aim is of course to kick as many goals as we can and get back to playing finals football."
