Draft Profile Jayden Laverde

Might appeal to the Pies. Giants might pull the trigger and take a potential matchwinner before loading up on tall
defenders. Laverde, Lever and Durdin. :drunk:

I'm hoping GWS will look to replace Boyd by drafting Wright with their first pick as the Pies need a class user like Laverde. I actually like Laverde more than Brayshaw and think his scope for improvement/upside is much higher. Once he's got an AFL build and tank behind his skill set he's gonna be a hard one to stop.

Latest measurement had him at 191 cm.
He is a unique prospect.
Hard to peg him as one player.
He could play as a third marking player forward, is excellent overhead.
Or he could play as an outside flanker on the HB / wing flanks.
Apart from Petracca, he is the most ready draftee for AFL next year.
Hine loves him.

Yep I think GWS will take a tall with pick 4
and would need to replace Boyd, Paton has dodgy knees they also have picks 6
&7 to pick mids.
Hopefully Pies get Laverde sounds like a young D.Thomas bet better.

STRENGTHS:
Kicking: For a tall player, Jayden Laverde is very classy and is able to quickly and accurately execute with his kicking. He is sound by foot and operated at a kicking efficiency of 70% at the U18 Champs, which was well above average. He’s a right-footer and an accurate one at that, he’s able to hit targets at difficult angles with relative ease and gains a lot of ground by foot.

Physical Tools: Laverde has an intriguing mix of speed, agility and explosiveness for a tall player (he stands at 189cm). Laverde’s testing results as a 17 year old would have put him in the top 30% of 2014 Combine attendees, his acceleration rated above average (he has run a sub 3 second 20m sprint) and his agility would have placed him in the top 5% of draft prospects. He did not test at the AFL Combine due to injury.

Marking: If Laverde carves out a role in midfield at AFL level, his marking will be a great asset and would set him apart from other midfielders. Laverde, a product of Penleigh & Essendon Grammar, has a standing reach that places him in the top quartile of draft candidates and fully uses his length to pluck strong marks. He has taken some stunning grabs this year (none more memorable than this screamer) and is a dangerous marking threat anywhere on the ground. His ability to combine physical prowess with marking and kicking has given Laverde real ‘X-Factor’.

WEAKNESSES:
Future in Midfield: Laverde has not yet shown consistent ability in midfield, which is where most teams would want him to play at the highest level. He can win contested ball, but is not as prolific at stoppages as other midfielders in the draft class. He’s still very much an outside player who can wins the majority of his possessions in the forward half.

Strength and Size: Laverde is still quite raw, at 80kg and has a long way to go in terms of building muscle mass and being able to match it with AFL bodies for strength. He’s a superior athlete, so there’s little to no doubt that strength will come in time.

WC and Carlton spoke to Laverde like they would do with every possible pick. Yet both passed on someone who was considered a soda to go in the top 10, let alone before pick 20. Interesting that WC needs mids and play on a larger ground, yet they overlooked a highly rated speedster for a player who isn't a tall utility and athlete.
