McEntee gets too much heat on this board. He's a limited depth player. No team has 40 genuine AFL standard footballers. He comes in and plays a role if (well, more likely when) the likes of Fantasia and Rioli get injured. He's not so bad that he can't do that.
No club has 40 afl standard players, unfortunately he's barely sanfl standard.

He averaged 0.3 goals and 3 effective disposals per game in his first 7 games.

As someone who's sat through a lot of Jed's performances at SANFL level, his end of season AFL run was a huge shock. However he had 2 reasonable games in 2 absolute thrashings, where it is always a bit easier to get involved.

The reality with McEntee is that he is extremely fumbly, lacks goal sense, and his celebrated defensive hunt has been non existant. His performance against West in the SANFL towards the end of the year, was telling. He had 5-6 key moments in the final term as we mounted our final charge, and he blew them all. ALL. Poor disposal, fumbling open plays, slow decisions and panic under pressure.

Honestly he should've been delisted on the spot.

He's somehow got another year and I doubt he'll play any AFL without injuries, but I hope that his end of season AFL form does count for something and gives him some momentum into 2023. Always happy to be wrong about a player, but IMO McEntee makes Jake Neade and Sam Gray look AFL Superstars. Post Port, once delisted, in 2024 I'd be surprised if he isn't playing a lot of footy at SANFL reserves level back at Sturt.

3 of those 7 games were as the sub including 2 where he didn't even take the field.

Disingenuous use of stats.
No, they weren't. If I was including the games he didn't take the field it would have been from his first nine games.

If we be fair and remove the game he was sub but did take the field, then it's 0.33 goals per game and 3.66 effective disposals per game. Still utterly terrible. It's not an exaggeration to say that Sam Gray would've tripled that output.

I genuinely wish we had sam Gray or early days neade back instead

It's fashionable to hate on McEntee, but he polled 12 votes in the BnF and polled in each of the final 5 games. Whilst he might never be a standout player, he competed in the role he was given as judged by the coaches.

He probably saved himself with that end of season run and I hope he continues to improve and at least provides depth in the defensive small forward role that he appears to occupy.

must be a very low bar if he polled in any game.

another wasted list spot through the stubbornness of our coaches.

See my post #262. Then I am proudly unfashionable. I am hopeful he will bone along and even get more game time in 2023. We have continual failed experiments trying to turn midfielders into high half forward flankers (Boak even?) but I am sending McEntee putting it together.

I don't hate McEntee, or any Port player for that matter, and wish the best for them in their career.
But we can do a lot better.

Same with one or two others.

Just need to make sensible list management decisions at the end of next season, and look to improve the list.

I thought you were joking. So he got a vote against Richmond in round 21? When he finished with one kick for the game.

All this says to me is that we need to sack our coaches even more desperately than I thought. If whatever the **** McEntee was doing this year was 'playing his role', then his role shouldn't exist and the coaches who created that role need to go.

I have no hate at all for Jed, but i definitely would have de-listed him. I would much prefer the possible upside of Noah Long or Blake Drury in the same role. I think we keep fringe players for too long because we are scared we will get something worse. Jed looks like he tries very hard on the field but i just don't see the upside.
