I'm against the whole Robert Walls idea of flogging of Robbo, Bruce, Green and Johnstone but Jeff White has to go, he still has great worth in the market - bugger Sydney isn't in search of a ruckman this year but I still think we could get a pick between 16-24 for him (StKilda maybe, or a top up at Hawthorn) - he just doesn't seem to have any passion for the Melbourne jumper, every week his stats look impressive, with plenty of disposals but they are just not worth anything anymore. He runs around getting cheap handballs and being counter productive as he just stops run from the backline. When he gets the ball he canters around for ages before deciding what to do with it. He struggled with the new ruck laws but I thought he would start to get the hang of it but it is clear he can't work it out. Jamar has to go as well, and Paul Johnson with Neaves promoted from the rookie list, along with this Kreuzer kid (hoping we finish last which looks set to happen if Riley boldly continues to play the kids) can form the future of our ruck stocks. Jeff White no longer plays like a premiership ruckman and must be let go of.

Here's one for SEN listeners, I'm MB and thats my take.

I don't like Jeff but he's a good player. Second in the league for hit-outs is a very good performance. Sometimes when i watch him it just looks like he's not trying. If we finish last or get Kreuzer somehow the option of trading him is open. But i still don't think we can go into the season with 2 or 3 ruckmen with little or no afl experience.

That new centre circle rule really ****ed up his career

Agreed. Although he is still dominating (to an extent) in the ruck the new center circle has limited him a great deal. Last night I thought White was superb and I don't see why people are saying he doesn't look like he wants to be there, last night especially he looked like one of the few who did want to be there. My opinion is that Jeff White needs to finish his career at Melbourne which gives us a couple or few years to have a look at after White ruckman.

BTW First post :)

Welcome to the party Dez.

I feel quite guilty reading this because for a long time Jeff White has been my favourite player. Of course I'm opposed to it, but bias aside, he's integral to our set up. I can't remember the last time he missed a game but I assure you if he did we would turn to shite. And for that very reason, having no real quality back up in the ruck, is the reason he should not be traded.

Cox and Seaby. Jolly and Everitt. Hale and McIntosh. At the moment, we can't put two ruckmen together to make a very effective ruck combo

Why don't we have an effective ruck combination, PJ goes pretty well when he is given a shot in the middle, White has to be the one to blame. He gets impressive numbers but no longer dominates the corridor or wins effective hit outs.

If you watch a replay of the game, watch in the first quarter, Charman gets the ball and casually as you like kicks in into the Brisbane forward line, because White was 5 metres away from him watching the ball instead of manning up. Too often he is caught chasing cheap kicks instead of doing the team thing and I'm sick of him, he won't win us a premiership so why not get rid of him.

To be honest, using the term 'he won't win us a premiership' can be applied to a fair few players on our list. Singling out Jeff just because he's unique in the sense that he's a ruckman is a bit harsh. Put it this way, had Jeff White played for St Kilda, I am 98% sure they would have won the a couple of years ago given his talent and their deep desire to have a quality ruckman. To find a quality ruckman is one of the most difficult things to do in the modern game and I wouldn't throw away a commodity like Jeff. He's a barometer for us if you ask me, if he's up and running, more than likely the team is doing so.

This frustration would not have been vented last year or the year before. A fair few of our players currently are having a shite year, White I believe isn't in this category. But I don't have foxtel so I cannot comment on his Brisbane performance however I think you're being a tad harsh on the lad. He's getting on but he's still useful. And I agree, PJ is a good prospect but at the moment, it's not the most dynamic duo in the competition. Next year though, I have great confidence that they will be considerably improved

I agree there are far more worse on our list and far worse ruckman (Jamar) its just White has been fustrating me since 05 and I'm sick of his week efforts. He only imposes himself on games when up against teams like Carlton, he crumbles agianst the likes of Cox and Sandilands. So whilst he has currency I'd give him the flick. If the new coach genuinely believed we can win the flag in the next two years I'd keep him but I dont see it happening. Rather do as Hawthorn did with Everitt and have PJ as our Robbie Campbell and Neaves as our Simon Taylor. And he is a barometer but I think its more when the team plays well he plays well than the other way round.

Yep thats right, hes given us 10 years of consistently top shelf football and we should just chuck him away because hes getting towards the end.

FFS, show a bit of loyalty. There are 30 others I'd get rid of before White.

Look I hear where you're coming from...But you gotta understand that Neaves for as long as he's been on the list hasn't put a foot onto AFL soil before. To think that we'd be able to develop both he and PJ into the standard of Campbell and Taylor in order to win a flag within 2 years is a bit much.

I'm not going to try and defend Jeff on all fronts but there is two things that dramatically stick out. For one, he's been our #1 ruck for a hell of a long time without much support, especially since 04/05. His workrate diminishes frequently given he carries the heavy burden of the ruck load and why wouldn't he given his ability. This along with the fact that the new bullshite circle has negated exactly how effective he is as a ruckman nonetheless, he still manages to be in the upper echelons of hit outs in the league.

I'm just saying don't stick the knife into him as we don't have a whole lot of options at the moment

I think we're lacking any semblance of a midfield system at the clearances, therefore a lot of Jeff's taps aren't to our advantage.

Keep him he still has value to us as a team and as for the comment of him not doing much with the ball when he has in the middle...he is the link man and he's not helped by not having runners like Whelan and Bell running through. This is something we have lacked all year, any run from behind the ball so his effectiveness as a link man is neglected. he should therefore push forward or deep in defence rather than sticking to the middle.

I was at the game last night and to be honest I thought he was one of our best. Didn't dominate the centre bounces but at least broke even, and covered a shitload of territory around the ground.

Took some good marks in defence and pushed forward well and ended up with 2 goals.

The charman incident that was mentioned came about because we were pushing forward and we turned the ball over in our forward 50, resulting in free players everywhere on the rebound. But charman's influence was relatively little around the ground besides that.

Quality post Stinga. Especially agree with the first comment. The Richmond game sprung to mind. In short our midfield>Richmond's midfield, no argument. Jeff totally murdered all in that match but our midfield were completely outclassed and slacked off in the game. Had Brock and Jmac become the clearance machines that they usually are in that game, Jeff would not have been copping the crap he's receiving.

Speaking of the midfield, does anyone have any thoughts on Williams as our midfield coach? He is our mid coach yeah?

Agree with this 100%. Have noticed it all year long. Not sure if its the new midfield coach or lack of some of our key mids, or perhaps a bit of both.

but if we get red of him we wont have any one that can match his abillity because i dont think pauk johnson or mark jamar are half as good as white

i completely disagree, Jeff White is the heart and soul of the team. I would be very disappointed to see him leave for he has been a real warrior and asset over the years. Also if he left who would take over the ruck? Paul Johnson is hopeless. If we did put him up to trade who would want him?

PJ is far from hopeless charlie.

This year has been his best so far. He has finally established himself in the side and is growing in confidence by the week. He is still very much playing second fiddle to White, thus he isn't recording huge numbers, but have a look at the effectiveness of his hitouts (usually in the Herald Sun) and he actually does quite well. Around the ground, he is a solid player with good athleticism and a high work rate.

your all talking about PJ wot about Jamar??

Wasn't there (TBO) to see sandy myself on Saturday, however i was speaking to a bloke from work who goes to all the Bendigo Games and he said He saw a massive bloke play a fantastic game. when i asked whether it was P.Johnson he said "no, the guy has a funny name" so i asked was it jamah, and he said "yeah, that's him". This guy - my work mate - said he played a corker. Smashed the ruck, as well as moved well around the ground, kicked a goal or two and even showed a bit of toe (speed) at times. I was surprised as hell as i'd given up on the big russian. Did anyone else see his game? Wondering if this fella from work is over-stating it.
