how long till teams will start tagging him? If i was Dean laidley i would be right on to it. his midfield role of sweeping off the back flank to defensive wing has been what i feel a big part of our success, he is doing an adam simpson type role to perfection and letting ling rack up in the middle of the ground and do slightly the same on the opposite back flank. Then players like chapman ablett kelly bartel byrnes are able to push forward and either kick goals or deliver to kingsley or ottens. I think our balance of defensive attacking midfielders and people who control the center and play a true center position is the reason behind our success.

I don't think teams will want to tag Corey because they will be tagging Ling instead... difficult to tag both.

Opposition teams do notice him. He was an AA player last year, wasn't he? Whatever the case, he travelled with the team to Ireland recently so he would be on opposition coaches minds. In the St Kilda game he was slammed many times, but just kept getting back up. He's not a media darling so he does kind of slip under everybody's guard, but there wouldn't be a team in the competition he hasn't killed with an 8 to 11 possession last quarter. His kicking lets him down at times which limits his effectiveness, but he'd still be rated.

He's a big midfielder (around 190cm tall) who keeps getting the hard ball. He can really run out a game and is excellent overhead. Also a very good kick for goal from 50m on any angle when he gets the chance. Excellent at reading the play which is why he often plays on the HBF as a kind of sweeper (much like Milburn). In fact, he often swaps with Milburn on the HBF or even Ling.

He would be tagged if the opposition could, as he definitely gets crunched at every opportunity. But there's only so many you can tag. Ablett always draws the opposition's best tagger. Ling tags other players. Bartel, Corey and Kelly don't have to worry about tagging, they just have to mind their own man. And it's hard to tag someone like Corey due to his size and aerobic capacity. If you put a similar sized player on him he'll run off them. If you put a player with similar aerobic capacity then he'll outmuscle them.

Hey finrod, I'm guessing here, but did you like the Silmarillion? Finrod Felagund was my favourite elf and second favourite character after Beren,as they were the most noble and courageous characters in the novel. Although, I must admit, no one comes near Hurin for sheer defiance. :p

wtf? Corey an AA player last year? I don't think so. He was in the team to Ireland though...

BTW, yes the Silmarillion is where I got my nickname. It is my favourite book :) Are you sure you are not getting Hurin confused with Turin? :p

If you tagged him...STRAIGHT TO THE GOALSQUARE!!

Utilities are hard to tag. He can play HF HB midfield or be thrown into the goal square.

There's only so many players you can tag. If you try tagging them all then the focus won't be on getting the ball and being pro-active, rather being reactive and just trying to stop the opposition.

Other sides have to look after Ling, Bartel, Kelly etc. They won't get any of the ball if they tag everyone. That's why our midfield is so great. We have so many options which leads to more headaches for the opposition.

Is one of the most underated players in the comp, and i rkn he isnt paid enough respect by the opposition most of the time, as they usually focus on ling, bartel ect..

Is like J McDonald of Melbourne. Doesn't get noticed but gives his all week in week out. A very good player who will form part of a VERY good midfield unit in the next few years.

St. Kilda tried to do a job on him a few weeks ago.

Have a look back at the tape and keep your eyes firmly fixed on Joel Corey.
It was plain to me that St. Kilda had a plan to smash Joel physically at every opportunity as a way of negating his noted impact on the second half of games.

A couple of incidents in particular stick in my mind.

1) Lenny Hayes literally jumping on a prone Joel on the far side of the ground

2) Joel copping an errand (or well placed, depending on your view) fist to the nose, resulting in him having to leave the field with the blood rule.

Whilst he may not get the standard tag, he most certainly is getting far more attention than he used to, and far more than your average player cops.

I think i counted 6-7 incidents in the second half where St. Kilda players went out of their way to hit Joel, be it by dropping knees, swinging arms or simply hitting him hard when he had his head over the ball.

They definitely made a concerted effort to try to hurt him, which shows me that a) he worried them bigtime and b) he's starting to get the recognition he deserves.

Yeah, I wasn't sure on the AA part, so that's why I left a question mark over it. :p

And I meant Hurin. If I remember correctly (unlikely given the time passed since reading it - over a decade ago) it was after the Battle of Unnumbered Tears that Hurin stood on a hill with his brother defending the retreat of Turgon and his army. He stood there with his axe against an army of Trolls and every time one tried to capture him he'd lop off their heads while crying "Day shall come again!". He did this 70 times before being captured and bound to a chair by Morgoth who would feed him lies to twist his mind. Hurin cursed Morgoth and insulted him about the injury he received to his feet from the sword of Fingolfin. It was this that lead to the tragic story of Turin, his sister Nienor and mother Morwen.

Whew! I can't believe I remember all this! :D

... totally agree the Saints game they tried to thump him, but failed. He is a harder player than he looks, will go close to winning our B7F this year. If he does get tagged the cats have the other Corey to stand up and do the same job. Both Coreys have been fantastic this year and both are under rated by other clubs and Cat Supporters alike.

For mine both will finish (baring injury etc)in our top 3 players of the year.

From todays Geelong Advertiser.

Joel Corey
The bad news for Cats' fans is that he will miss between 3-4 weeks after having an arthroscope on his left knee last week.
Corey may get away with a two-week break but if there was any cartledge trimmed he would be safer in taking a month's rest.
It's a major concern, given that it's Corey's third arthroscope in 12 months. He missed about a month of footy mid-last year after an op on his right knee and then another four weeks during the pre-season after a clean-out on his left knee.
