Rookie Hinge a proud Crow

John Hinge, Adelaide's only South Australian-based rookie, says he is 'rapt' that the Crows have added him to their rookie list for season 2005.

"I was surprised I got the call up and I was absolutely rapt when the club told me I was on the list," the 18-year-old said.

Hinge was among the 16 players invited to the Crows' inaugural rookie camp, and the Glenelg forward impressed with his explosive power, ability to find the ball and booming kick.

The Crows' third selection (No. 36 overall) in the National Bank's AFL Rookie Draft was thrilled to be at the same club as many of his idols.

"Meeting all the players has been great," he said.

"I've watched players like Mark Ricciuto, Tyson Edwards and Andrew McLeod, and I love the way they play."

"It is a thrill to meet them and now to train alongside them. It was a big thing for me meeting my idols."

The 186-centimetre Hinge played mostly school football at Sacred Heart College this year and had the occasional run with Glenelg under-19s. He has been likened to Scott Welsh with his ability to play tall and as a key forward.

"I have played up forward for the past couple of seasons and I think that I attack the ball hard and I try to have a physical presence on the field," he said.

The talented Hinge has set himself two goals for next season.

"Firstly, I haven’t played a senior game for Glenelg so that will be my number one goal," he said.

"Secondly, I'm looking forward to doing the pre-season training with the Crows and improving my fitness and strength."

"Long term, every kid wants to play AFL football, but at the moment my focus is on playing senior football with Glenelg, and maybe one day in the future getting a game with the Crows."

Everytime I hear about players having a physical prescense, it's music to my ears - longtime overdue at this club :)

Does antone know is he just a forward or can he play in the middle? i'd like him in the middle crashing through packs
Played junior footy as a CHB, could play ruck in sperts, not sure if he has stopped growing - although last yearhe was supposedly 197cm, this year 195cm, so maybe he's in regression - could be the next Macca ;) :p

I think the days of Adelaide drafting players of Skipworth's build and Doughty's aggression levels are over, no matter how skilful they might be, which would explain why we didn't take Pearce in the draft or as our 1st rookie pick.

Adelaide would be a club with one of the lowest physical presences of all of the 16 teams. That doesn't mean to say that we haven't played honest footy. I'm talking about a lack of players with a bit of mongrel in them and capable of a bit of physical intimidation - one of the chief ingredients in the old Port Magpies recipe for flags, and adopted in recent years by Brisbane and of late Port Adelaide.

Our recruiting philosophy this year seems to definitely acknowledge the need for this type of player, and I'm rapt that it does.

Quality post - and I agree completely.

Physical intimidation is way underrated in the AFL and, IMO, players who can create a physical presence is required in all teams. 99% of this game is above the shoulders. Win the mental battle on the field and you'll go along way to being successful.

The article said he was 186cm.

Yeah having grown up watching Port Adelaide win flag after flag with that agressive style does leave an imprint on how the game needs to be played.

Thought with Ayres playing style that he would recruit some "mongrel" players but when you think of the Hawthorn teams of yesteryear, whilst they had some hard players, it wasn't a trademark of their play.

You do need a balance of hard and skillful players - hence the need for the Van Berlo type, but the emphasis this year, and for that matter last year, on hard at it players IMO will set us up for more consistent performances year on year.

This is one area where Port have it over us - 3 years as minor premiers (despite big injuries) wheras we are up and down like yo yo's never really dominating the comp or getting respect consistently.

Hinge comes from Mundulla in the SE near Bordertown, I have seen him play once and he basically turned the game around singlehandedly, 2nd Semi btw, played at CHF and was very mobile.
Mundulla has an awesome country footy record, regularly they win the flag in A's B's under 17's etc, good to see a kid come out of that football factory and I hope he does well.

Reminds in appearance and playing desription of John Fidge from Glenelg - is a bit like Bienke?

I don't like comparisons, played more of a ruck rover style of CHF ie not a stay at home type, As with all players from Mundulla they are well coached and have good footy brains, I think he could play anywhere but wing is more likely, I could be wrong, and haven't stood shoulder to shoulder but I doubt he is a KPP just yet.
Will check back after cricket to answer any other queries.

He indicated his fitness levels are well down on requirements - couln't see a wing posi for hi in the short-med term.

Sounds more like a HFF.

Bursts on the wing maybe?
If he's been playing as a CHF in junior footy, from way over here in melb, you would suggest some forward role.

Think we have or have recruited plenty of players you would earmark for a wing b4 Hinge I would have thought.

Yeah, it's unlikely that he'll be a wingman; more like a HFF as you suggest.

You are correct in saying Mundulla have an awesome flag record for a small country town playing against bigger population towns who pay their players more. Will find out more about Hinge in January when I catch up with my aunty/uncle/cousins who come from Mundulla (including my cousins hubby who coached his Mudulla side to the flag - the B's I think).
