There’s been a thread on him before but it’s impossible to locate it due to the fact you can’t use the search function.

John McDonald is the classiest young midfielder I’ve seen in the SANFL since Monfries. He's 18 years of age, from Sturt and is a left footer. To me the sign of a quality player is someone with good vision and this is the main thing that stands out in McDonald’s game. He just knows what to do with the ball and his skills by foot are immaculate. He has the ability to sums up a situation very quickly. He’s got good pace and likes to back himself, and he’s also dangerous around goal.

There has been very little talk about him so hopefully he sneaks under the radar as I would love to draft him. :thumbsu:

He has already been noticed and wont sneak under the radar. I dont think his indiscretions will cause too much concern either

As I noted on other threads I have some concern he concentrates on using his left foot exclusively, I could also be wrong but would love to hear of other posters who have noticed this trend, or if I am hopelessly wrong again :p

I think he might. He wasn't initially selected in SA's U/18 squad, but eventually made the squad after good form for Sturt. And then he missed the Championships due to that whole drinking saga. Normally guys who miss the Champs don’t go too highly and are overlooked.

We all know Neil Craig drafts guys of great character, so my concern is that they’ll be turned off because of his indiscretion. Too great a talent to overlook from one incident though.

He kicked on his right foot today, and it wasn’t a bad kick either. He is capable on his non preferred so you shouldn’t be too concerned.

The more I watch of him the more impressed I am. Silky smooth in evading traffic, and likes to run and carry the ball. And as I've said his vision is top notch.

.
No doubt, but this para leads me to a further question. How many blokes do you have in your sights for the AFC to draft? We wont get them all so I dont want threads in 12 months time McDonald>>>>>>>Wonamarie

Besides his sublime skills, he has HEAPS of confidence in his own ability, which is going to stand him in good stead when (and not if) he plays AFL.

Would love to see him in a Crows jumper but I won't be surprised if he is taken before we get to him.

There's only a few SA guys that I'm interested in really. Obviously I'd like Ebert and he should be available with our first pick, but the two other guys I'm interested in are McDonald and Wonaemirri. The latter will probably spend another year in the SANFL however he was the NT’s MVP so he is a chance to be drafted.

Say we have pick 8/9, you think he’ll be taken before that? Not likely! He should be there for our second pick and I wouldn't mind taking him with that, but I guess it depends on what other youngsters we have in mind. I can't see him going before pick 30, but I could be wrong. I'd rather take a gamble and pick him early than let him go to another club though.

John is a very cocky player, and will kick it whenever he can. I don't rate his skills, especially his kick. All he does is kick it, hardly ever does he lace a player out.

I don't think he will get drafted. He will turn out like Hurley. Or possibly rookie drafted.

Hes come along massively this last 6 months or so. When he played up here he was good but he was never THAT good. Wouldnt mind seeing him end up here at the AFC so another Hills boy gets a crack !!

Agree. I meant he would probably be gone by the time we were ready to draft him, assuming that there would be others in line for our first draft pick.

Having said that, I won't be disappointed if we take a gamble, like you said, and get in early.

He’s an interesting one that’s for sure. There’s definitely a bit of Hurley in him in that he’s a little undersized and he doesn’t appear to be overly athletic. But I believe he is easily AFL standard and he’ll develop into a quality midfielder. I just hope we go for the footballer as opposed to the athlete.

He’s still very thin and he’ll need to add at least 10kg’s to compete at the highest level. He has great skills and he’s got a thumping kick, superb vision, and as you said he appears to have a lot of confidence in himself. That’s evident by the way he backs himself and run and carries the ball.

Quality player that's for sure. :thumbsu:

At Unley this year when we played Centrals 1 of the Gowans boys got stuck into him, as they do and Johno stuck up for himself and got right in their faces.... now thats confidence for a then first gamer !!!

Got dropped for Sturt's only final which was a bit of a surprise.

Went to the AFL testing in SA.

Expect him to be on a rookie contract at least next year.

I don't think he will go any later than 25 in the draft. An absolute steal if he is only picked up as a rookie.

He featured in my local messenger paper today. Seems he has pretty high expectations on the draft.

:thumbsu: and probably not the Crows

Hey everyone.

Here's just my thoughts on drafting.

When you draft a player they have to have a strong attribute. May that be a great mark, a great kick at goal, height, speed etc.

These attributes lead to a player excelling at a particular position.

The thing with John McDonald is that he doesn't have an outstanding talent imo. He is not tall, not a big jump, doesn't use the ball particularly well. I cannot see him playing in the middle, nor back or even forward.

I would not mind if the crows rookie drafted him, but I fear it would be a waste of a draft pick if we did pick him up
