Invest in some Soothers, Butter Menthols, Anticols, Strepsils or bloody throat surgery because YOU ARE DYING and your voice sounds terrible.

who cares, it happens, when ya loose ya voice (which i do after most melbourne games, especially the tense ones where the umpires are crap), menthols dun help much

Yeah, I noticed that when I was listening to the radio in the car when I was on my way to the match last night. Didn't sound good at all. I didn't recognise his voice at first.

Does anyone know why they call him "Sam"?

Bob Davis gave him the nickname.

When Newman first arrived at Geelong in the early sixties, Davis was a fan of an American variety TV show (can't recall the name) and the show had a bandleader called "Sam". One of the catch cries of the show was "Take it away, Sam" or some similar inane chatter, and Davis liked to use the line when talking to Newman... And as such, a nickname is born..

It was the Jackie Gleeson show, and he would say to Sam to start the show "and away we go" When John Newman led the team out of the race he would say to his team mates "and away we go" so he got the nickname "Sam":)
