Well deserved IMO. Could have been anything as a player until his knee went. Turned out to be a tough but excellent coach.
Growing up as a kid, I fondly remember the great Swans years in the early eighties.
Took the Eagles to their first finals, unlucky to be beaten by eventual Grand Finalist Melbourne.

3 Cheers for Toddy

It is scary to think what he would have been if he didn't do his knee.

Sandover medallist at 17.

Its what he did after that that puts a big black mark in Todd's book for mine. I call 1989 the "Toddy's boys era" where all the ex- Swan Districts players got game time they most certainly didn't deserve.

The Eagles had extremely small squads in the late 80s compared to their Victorian rivals and so when injury struck it was always going to be a hard road for Toddy to get the Eagles to be competitive. Lets not forget he took us to our first finals appearance in 1988.

Every coach in a 50-50 situation will lean towards a player they know more about.
As Sera mentioned we had very small squads back then, so I'm sure a lot of players got game time they didn't deserve. Thats regardless of whether they were from Swan Districts or a lesser club ;)

Great to see an ex-Eagle associate being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Apparently Todd could have been anything if he didnt bust his knee so early on in his career.

When you say the name WAFL, John Todd would have one of the first names you associate WA football with.

On that note, who do you think will be the first Eagle ever inducted? Unfortunately I can see Roo Matera going in first, who while I liked, was overrated in terms of his place in the team. Particularly by those over East.

I'd like to see Kempy, Bluey & Whoosha go in, and eventually Jako once he retires. If *and only if, so i'm not jinxing us at all* Whoosha took us all the way, he'd have to be an eventual chance, wouldn't he?

Course I am talking some time into the future.

You think Kemp, Whoosha, Bluey and Jako deserve the honour before Peter Matera? IMO they all deserve a spot in the AFL Hall of Fame eventually. But Roo would have to come before anyone IMO, he is our greatest ever player.

No, that'd be Jako. Don't believe the hype. Even if you are an NBA fan ;)

I'd say Peter Matera would be the first Eagle inducted into the Hall of Fame. How many years does a player need to be retired before he can be considered?

Todd was a great coach and has the proof in the pudding, however, I do agree with some on his Eagle years when he did have an abundance of Swans players who did not deserve to be there. The list of players we were allowed in 88 and 89 was only 38 while the VFL clubs had lists of 52.

Todd also was kicked in the teeth for his letting go of Zanotti and big Alex and other party animals as they would not toe the line at the club. However, these guys would never have played under MM if this was the case.

89 was a bad year for the club, injuries and personality clashes took their toll on the club, but Todd still managed to get some wins at the end of the season.

Malthouse has praised Todd for his work at the club as well as bringing in a level of professionalism to the players. Like I said, MM would not even have players like Ischenko and Zanotti at the club. If Todd did not get rid of these players, Malthouse certainly would have.

Onya Toddy, You're a legend.
