It has been well publicized that Giles has been offered an inadequate contract by the Giants. If he was to walk to a different club, would they consider using pick 1 on Brodie Grundy?

If so, this turns the whole draft on it's head as GC would have to reconsider bidding on Viney with Whitfield suddenly becoming available!

Completely hypothetical of course, but something to watch out for.

I think in the end they'll re-sign Giles. They will end up coming to the table with a good deal as there would be plenty of other clubs out there who wouldn't mind him in their side.

I don't think anything, even Giles leaving, would stop GWS from taking Whitfield. It is a good hypothetical as it means that one of Toumpas or Whitfield would fall to us (even if we had to use Pick 3 on Viney) but I think it would be a long shot to occur.

Stategically we should make a play for Giles. Then GWS would have to look for another option to fill their ruck stocks (Grundy?) and GC would take Whitfield. We could then take Viney with a later pick and have 3 and 4 to choose whoever we want. :thumbsu: Dare to dream?

Actually, Giles could be a good addition to our team, in more ways than one. :thumbsu:

Particularly if we trade Martin to Collingwood... although they would probably be better off taking Giles in FA than having to trade for Stef.

Magpies consider young Giant for ruck role
MINDFUL of the burden on the ageing shoulders of veteran premiership ruck Darren Jolly, Collingwood has shown interest in out of contract Giant Jonathan Giles.
Giles is merely one of a number of ruck options for next year being explored by the Magpies, who will enter tonight's game with Jolly supported by a sore Chris Dawes and have been hurt by the loss of retired forward/ruck Leigh Brown this year.

Giant Giles looks at Adelaide return
Giles is understood to have refused an initial new deal from Giants list manager Steve Silvagni and could be headed for trade talks next month

Damn, I hope Giles walks. We'll then have GWS over a barrel re: the mini draft.

Spencer or Martin + 13 for a mini-draft pick, anyone?

The only thing that'll increase our chances of getting Viney 2nd round is if GC think they need pick 2 to trade for Tippet IMO.

Absolutely - especially if Tippett is happy to go to either club, it puts GC in the hot seat. Not sure on the rules but if they nominate Viney with, say, their Pick 2 does that mean they cannot trade it? Just thinking out loud...

I don't think so - but if they know they need it for Tippet it puts a greater element of risk on using it.

If they nominate viney with pick two, MFC either pledges pick three or does not. This is what determines if GC can trade pick two, they will either be locked into taking viney or we will have committed to him with p3.
Surely if they think they may need it to get Tippett they wouldn't risk bidding on viney and then not being able to trade the pick?

Yeah, the amount of variables are growing; GWS/Giles, Tippett and the mini draft. Logistically, they should play it safe but...
