COLLINGWOOD says it believes Jordan De Goey did not knowingly drink drive and will seek to give the chastened youngster a second chance in the AFL.
They said contaminated illicit drugs was the likely explanation.
De Goey had been at the St Kilda Festival on February 9 with friends including other footballers.
“While I am unable to be absolutely certain as to how this substance came to be in my system, I can only assume it occurred during a night out prior to driving, on which I took illicit drugs,” De Goey, 22, said.
“Although I can’t be sure, I believe the substance I took was laced with alcohol. I want to stress that at no stage did I knowingly take alcohol.
“I acknowledge I made a serious error in judgment. I want to make it absolutely clear that I have never intentionally been drink-driving”
Pies chief Eddie McGuire made reference to the club song, saying that “side by side we stick together”.
“We accept that Jordan did not intentionally go drink driving and did not knowingly consume alcohol,” McGuire said.
“We accept that this was a case of a young man who made a poor decision to consume illicit drugs."
“We also believe the best thing that we can provide for him is light at the end of the tunnel – to rekindle his football career.”
