Not a stats man but 14 disposals - more than Moons - seems not too bad. I am surrounded by Hunt bashers at SS and he made one glaring miscalculation right in their goal square which brought much "told you so" remarks. I like this bloke and I thought he was pretty good considering the abuse thrown his way on this board (almost as much as Byrnes). I know Rooke is a superior player but Hunt is playing an important role at present. Didn't see any bullet passes to opposition players and I realise that ordinary players look good against poor sides - and Richmond were terrible! Are we happy with him?

Not sure what to do with Hunt, I'm just not sure he is good enough as a backman....if he can't find his niche elsewhere then he will struggle to become a permanent member of the starting 22.
I had an idea at the start of the year with him becomming a half forward flanker, he's a good mark and a great long kick but he's just not quick enough with his hands or on his feet to hold down a spot where he is at the moment.

Thought he only was beaten in a contest once and his passing is back to very good. Deserves his spot

Hunt deserves to play in the side and is unfairly criticised. Byrnes is the one player that annoys me, he panics when he has the ball and he can never kick a goal.

On balance, he was good. He kept Brown quiet for most of the game but for a few slips.

Brown got away from him on the lead twice late in the game but it was all over by then anyway.

The only other criticism I have was when he was weak in a marking contest. He allowed Brown to take a soft mark because he lost him when the ball was in flight, failed to watch the ball and failed to get enough body contact on Brown. For someone of Hunt's size, he really needs to impose himself in those situations.

It is a pity that Hunt is often associated with the one error - but this was an obvious one. Howls of derision - but in the main he was quite good on Saturday. Agree that he can physically impose himself more effectively - leaves me wondering whether he is a bit slow in making those decsions rather than deliberately avoiding them. 6/10 for the day.

It's the same for all fringe players. Look at Tenace, Byrnes, Varcoe, etc. People look for a reason to drop them and often one mistake is all it takes.

I tried to give a balanced view thoughh.

I think you do in the main. Tenace looked terrible leaving the ground after the VFL match - head down - wouldn't look up at the kids calling encouragement to him - just shook his head. I used to think highly of him (still do really) but have some awful mistakes etched on my mind. (I'm being urged by workmates to pump up Hunt but he gets due credit.)

I think Tenace's hamstring injury might explain that behaviour.

Hunt is genuinely on the fringe of the side, which means similar to sides vying for the 8 at present, he may not completely have his own destiny in his hands at the moment (injuries and form issues with other players on the cusp of the side). Whilst Rooke is obviously a walk up start in the starting 18 he wont be seen that way for some time this year if at all. This opens the door for guys like Hunt, DJ and I would have said Tenace but it looks like he might have copped an injury on the weekend by those posts above which could end his chances if its a hammy again.

I think Hunt is playing ok to be honest but wouldnt say he was integral to the defensive structure. His bigger body could be useful come finals...will he decide to use it is the key? It could also get down to who we play in that first final team balance wise. Hunt for instance did ok against Port this year..so if we play them first up I would be thinking to select him. If we played a side like West Coast or Sydney I am not so sure he copes well with that sort of quick delivery into the forward 50...he tends to lose his player and just get a bit lost in general too easily under that sort of pressure.

i've always had a very soft spot for our man josh
and obviously he has become a much more fringe player this year, but i think he is doing alright
it is obvious that his main issue is that he just lacks confidence; no confidence to kick the ball long and direct and with supreme accuracy (no one can doubt that by far his greatest assest is a mean left boot)
but i think my continually giving him a run he will start to crank that kick out more and more often
not sure if u all noticed, but as i say i have a soft spot for him and watched his game carefully, but he took one kick out where he saw no one was on the mark, played on for about 30m, then drove a 60m lace out pass to someone on the wing
this kind of play needs to be seen more often from him
so dont get me wrong, i can see where the critics of his r coming from, but i think a fully confident and rearing to go hunt is a real asset to the team
obviously he does need to improve on his commitment to some contests etc etc as well

chemistry:eek:

I agree, and I think that's his problem. Josh at or near his best is in the 22 imo, but we just don't seem to get consistently good games from him.
If he could put together say three to four 8/10 or 9/10 games, then I think he's in. But there's too many times he's put in games of about 5/10 or 6/10, and all we can do is get frustrated that he doesn't play to his potential.

At times to me, Josh Hunt should receive a lifetime membership to JetStar as he is the biggest passenger that we have at Geelong. With his size and kicking ability, he should be near unbeatable. Nathan Brown out muscled him on the w/e and scored a goal from it. Thats a poor effort to any standard.

JH could be such a better player if he wanted to be, but for some reason, he chooses not to.

The bloke is a squib. Hears footsteps, soft in a marking contest and seems to lack depth perception with his field kicking.

I'm just glad that Bomber isn't given free range at the selection table this year and as a result he's not getting a gig simply because he is good at kick ins.

If we had a fully fit Rooke he would struggle to get a game IMO.

Wow a quality player in Brown took a mark against him and he goaled from it! Yes because every player that has a goal scored on them is obviously a hack and should be dropped immediately. The complete stupidity of some supporters is incredible. Crawl back in your hole.

I'd agree with most on here, that would give him a 6/10 for the day. We all know what he can do on occasion, however he seems to be off that for most of the time.

I hope he can improve, I do believe at his peak he is near our best 22, can he get there before the season ends ??

I hope so. If he realises his size and ability to break a tackle when he goes at full speed, he will be great to the team. His kicking is awesome when on song, there's nothing like a guy who can punch a ball out 60m to a free player.

Josh played ok on the weekend. He never does enough to cement his spot in the team. Just once I'd like to see him have a blinder and use his considerable bulk to its full potential.

BTW, I was standing with Renegade on the weekend and he nearly creamed himself everytime joshy went near the ball.

Whatever rocks your boat:rolleyes:

Go CATS!!

mark my words josh will give us something over the next few games and cement his spot for our finals campain. his driving left foot is a hugh asset to our backline and it works realy well now with hunt puting the ball well beyond the centre also seem not to kick it every time seen him feed the handball back i few time to ego-scarlett-milhouse.but if he slips up he'll be just outside our best 22. IMO

What BDP said.

Always believed in Hunt to make his way back to our best 22, and I reckon he's almost got it right. I think we have too high expectations from him because of his size. Size wont make him a better player, but I would like to see him start imposing himself a bit more on the opposition. However, in saying this, with his increased bulk, is there a plan here that we don't know about, come September action ?? JH bulked up over last pre season, was there more reason to this than we know? I dunno.. who does?

At the end of the day, I reckon JH can give us more aggression and he's holding back on his true potential. In my best 22 come finals time.

I can't understand why we must hate our own players. A couple of my friends are guilty on all counts when it comes to player bashing and it does my head in. If they're on our list, I'll cheer for them and forgive them for making mistakes (we all do it).

There is one exception... Sam Hunt, I want him delisted immediately but that is because I have a personal problem with him.
