A year or so after Curtis's death, New Order were setting up for a gig and someone asked them, "Where's the singer?", to which either Hook or Sumner replied, "Hanging around in the kitchen".

True story.

They also joked about it in "The New Order Story" where they said they talked Curtis into killing himself to improve their profile, and they were surprised when he took their advice.

I recall the Butthole Surfers programming Rage in 1991, and when they introduced Joy Division, Gibby Haynes said "now here's a WELL HUNG band!" :D

I also remember the old bootleg recordings they used to sell at places like Missing Link Records and plenty of them had a picture on the back cover of Ian Curtis with a drawing of a noose around his neck.

And deservedly so.

Oh yeah they were very ordinary. I used to have a begrudging admiration for them though, most would have buckled under the pressure and thrown a tanty but they gave as good as they got. At least they got lots of support spots because the headliners knew they werent going to get shown up.

Speaking of such incidents, I saw an American band called "Spain" and they were supported by The Paradise Motel. TPM were magnificent, probably the best gig I ever saw them do. Spain were dreadful - just a bunch of blokes, standing still on the stage, and going through a join the dots performance of their songs. I wasn't sure if they were overawed by TPM, bored, stoned, or just genuinely crap. I nearly fell asleep, I was wishing there was a heckler, and I couldn't believe it when they got an ovation and calls for an encore.

Maybe there's a new topic in this, "Support bands who overshadowed the headliner".

There's actually a movie in the making on the life of late Joy Division singer Ian Curtis.

New Order are releasing a new single "Krafty" and new album "Waiting for the sirens call" in March.

I saw New Order play in '87 at Festering Hall. Cattletruck were the support - anyone else remember them?

LOL , Got the 12 inch version of "Leave Me" on vynil , was a good song , shame about the rest of thier career

Saw New Order and Janes addiction BDO sideshows at the Metro a couple of years ago ...... absolute musical fulfilment . Just love Hooks bass - original , was highly amused that Bernard had to use the teleprompter , never took his eye off it .

Those that saw them at the 87 shows , like myself , would not have believed the different personas they had . In 87 they just stood there like mutes and never said a word but this time around they were carrying on like a bunch of 21 year olds on thier first tour . Loved it when Hooky in no uncertain terms had someone thrown out for moshing , should be more of it .

"Atmosphere" bought tears to my eyes.

With that Metro gig, I've been told that they had to sell double the legal crowd limit for the venue. It was the only way they could make a profit after New Order's fee for the gig.

Ah yeah, Barney and his drugs.

I didn't go to the Metro gig. Those who managed to see the stage said it was a great gig. But I knew plenty of people who couldn't see anything because the venue was so crowded.

I also think New Order did a tour around '83/'84. Did anyone here see it?

Didn`t see 84 shows but recent Metro show i was right up the front and i kid you not ... it was not that bad , plenty of room. I think people tend to walk into a gig and if there is a lot of people they think "gee it is packed, we`ll never get near the front " and they just prop where they are , thus worsening the crunch up the back . I think it was worsened by the fact that i reckon that there was a fair percentage of people there who hadn`t been to a gig in a looooooooooooooooong time . 30 somethings everywhere who didn`t like thier personal space invaded at all

He wasn't a 'druggie'.

He never liked himself, his epilepsy was getting worse, especially when performing (strobe lights), and he had cheated on his wife, which he felt guilty about. From what I've learned.

Joy Division were much darker than New Order. Joy Division may possibly be more influential than New Order too.

Both rule.
he was into drugs

News of a new New Order album would have sent me into a state of restless anticipation once.

But their last two albums (and most of their side project stuff) left me pretty cold.

I'll still buy it, but it's case of hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

Are you kidding me? I rate their last album "Get Ready" as one of their best, tracks such as Crystal, Slow Jam, Someone Like You, Close Range, 60 Miles An Hour amongst some of their best work.

Although i do agree that some of the Electronic, The Other Two & Revenge material wasn't half as good as the New Order stuff. Electronic had a few moments.

For the record, what would be your top 10 New order tracks?

Don`t agree at all ....... Give me a better comeback than " Get Ready " ????????????? After all those years , have a listen to some of the efforts like Duran Duran and get back to me

Ah, this will be very tough. Like any top 10 list, I'll have a different set of songs in a week's time. The only thing that is set is that Temptation (the original 12" version, not the re-recorded versions found on the compilations) is my favourite New Order song.

1. Temptation
2. Ceremony
3. The Perfect Kiss
4. 1963
5. Age of Consent
6. Blue Monday
7. Lonesome Tonight
8. Thieves Like Us
9. Dreams Never End
10. All Day Long

What's your top 10? You too IDGAF.

Yep! It was at the Palais in Melbourne. Great show. I then saw them at the Powerhouse in Melborne in '85/'86. They were touring Lowlife. The Wreckery was the support act. I met all of New Order.

Incidentally, the Powerhouse gig was on May 17th. At Midnight Bernard asked for a time check-when he knew it was past twelve they broke into LWTUA. I had tears in my eyes and spent the rest of the night staring into Albert park lake. It was good to be a teenager in those days.

Words can't express just how envious I feel right now.

I guess i feel the same with Blue Monday (Original 12" version) being my all time fave N.O track, it is quite tough though and would probably change from week to week.

1. Blue Monday (Original)
2. True Faith (Original Version)
3. Bizarre Love Triangle
4. Thieves Like Us
5. Round & Round (One of their more pop moments, but a track i can never get sick of)
6. Crystal
7. Touched By The Hand Of God (see number 5.)
8. Temptation
9. 1963
10. I guess i could fill this spot up with any number of songs, but for now i'll throw in Regret.

Hey all. I'v been reading in Q magazine about an english ban, Joy Divsion. They released only a couple of albums before the lead singer killed himself... one of those bands that 'coulda been'
Has anyone gotten into Joy Division before?
I strated at Uni in 1982 and thye where at their height then - Ian Curtis was the singer - they where great in a post punk depressing sort of way - the album "Closer" sold well and the single of that "Love will tear us apart" went top forty - which is incredible for a band like that - they are named after the Gestapo unit which used to farm out the good looking women in concentration camps for "Comfort": hence Joy Division - the songs were equally fun. For example they had a song called "Atrocity Exhibition. The Skinheads thought they were Fascists but like all good Mancehster working class boys they where all avowed socialists.

Peter Hook the bass player was the sheit he had the lowest slung bass stance outside of the Ramones!!!!!

Curtis died in 1980, so LWTUA would have hit the top 40 at that time rather than in 1982.

Joy Division did retain a solid cult following through the 1980s - it seemed like every person who went against mainstream music had the Unknown Pleasures t-shirt and a poster of the band in their bedrooms.

And when they changed to the name, New Order, a similar controversy erupted.
