Hi all.

Just wondering if anyone out there factors junk time into their player selection, i.e., do you select one player over another because the team might junk it up at the end of quarter or game ?

Cheers

Nah, not really any point when you think about it, it is not very reliable as junk time does not happen in every game. Therefore you can not really factor it into DT consideration.

I think this should not be dismissed so quickly. Certainly for S/C not relevant however for DT certainly worth considering. St.Kilda's style of game is very much hold the ball and don't let the opposition obtain the ball. They play a style that deprives their opposition of the ball & try to dominate the % of possession.

Essendon FC have stated that in 2010 they will try to help their backline a lot more. I expect their midfield players to drop back into the backline. They have also stated that they will try to slow down the play at times. To me this would suggest a higher level of possessions for Essendon players.

Perhaps not so much junk time - more style of play of each team at different stages of a match!!

Junktime is an important consideration when choosing defenders. I'm not going to go into it but previously players like Joel Bowden, Peter Burgoyne, Darren Milburn and Adam McPhee have been junktime specialists, racking up cheap marks and kicks across half back towards the end of quarters.

Yeah, it's a point worth considering; junk time specialists is just another string to a players bow. If they are in a team that holds possession, it represents value.

Have a look at the top scoring and averaging players in 09. Look at what teams they came from and where those teams finished on the ladder. Style of play, success of teams... lots of things add up to potential increases in scoring.

The rolling zone is employed by most teams now and therefore less space is available in a team's defensive zone to really junk it up compared to years gone by.

Nevertheless it does still exist to some extent and as mentioned above, defenders from the top teams will be your best bet if you're after a Junk Time Exponent (JTE).
