Good post. I dont agree that Byrnes is a running half back flanker in the making though (please dont ask me why!)

Why? :D

I'm expecting [ hoping ] that Hunt will play a pearler tomorrow, as I reckon he realises that not only his position in the team at present, but possibly his future at Geelong may very well be decided in the coming weeks.

For sure...and thats what they have been trying to fix.

I have followed your posts in regards to Tenace and have agreed to the reasoning behind them,in fact I am of the same belief. In theory Tenace would be perfect( with his speed to get to space in order to link)but he might have let his chance slip with his first half last week.
Djerrkura on the other hand is much more skilled, quick and looks like he will develop a strong body. Unfortunately he is 1-2 years away.

There is a glaring whole in the makeup of the side, and that is the small/medium defender that can run and link and I have no doubt that in the next few years Djerrkura will be that man.

Do you guys think it's "that" glaring a weakness?
Sure it would be an advantage to have someone fill that type of role but looking at the game last week [ and most games this year actually ] we ran the ball from one end of the ground to the other as quick as I've seen, and this was in passages of play that Tenace didn't feature in.

Byrnes 175cm & 77 kg
Tenace 182 cm & 86 kg

Pretty obvious why Byrnes is not playing in the backline.

Byrnes would be killed in one on ones against skilled Hfs.The position of the link running back also requires defensive skills, ability to hold your position in marking contests and good judgement.

I agree.
Why does it have to be a small/medium defender who can run and link.
Guys like Enright, Milburn, Mackie, Wocjinski e.t.c. are performing those sorts of roles wonderfully...

I agree, all very good players but in the last couple of years we have had problems with the smaller forwards.

I wish Hunt well because what you are saying is correct.

DanA seems to have summed the Byrnes argument up rather succinctly...dont have time to spill a can of worms today!

I think a running half back is important yes. Mackie is quite quick for his size and Enright has had more run this season than the past 2 but against the really top sides you need to cover more leading options and find some space linking up the ground. Having players all going at around the same speed makes it too easy to coach against down back and we become too predictable. I also think being able to cut off 50/50 contests before they happen on the half back line because you have a guy with the leg speed to get to the loose ball first really helps conserve energy for the back six and put alot of pressure on the opposing side. In a war of attrition those things become vital.

Not sure Djerrkura is tall enough to be in the backline either at 176cm but he is much heavier than Byrnes.

I think Djerkurra should model his game on Chapman.

I think he should mode his game on Byron Pickett, play back and forward.
He's listed at 179cm...

Can't argue with that, a "McCloud" type player would slot in very nicely down back thank you very much, just don't see us not having such a type as a huge weakness is all, the main aim of the defence [ obviously ] is to restrict the oppositions scoring and we seem to be doing that pretty well at the moment [ hopefully we'll be number one again in that area after this weekend ]

Was only kiddin' about your reasons for Tenace V Byrnes by the way.
