Hey guys

I'm after some insight.

The powers that be in my long standing h2h, 9 cat, 10 team yahoo fantasy basketball league are looking to make the change from seasonal to keeper next season.

There are a lot of suggestions floating around, but the main discussion is falling on:

1. Allowing manages to keep as many players as they want OR

2. Allowing managers to keep a min and max number of players OR

3. Allowing managers to keep a fixed number of players each.

In terms of 1 and 2, the popular opinion is to set the number quite high - between 5 and 10 total.

Personally, I'm for 3 and think the keepers should be limited to 3 or 4 - mainly so future draft interest isn't killed off, to keep managers active and to encourage trading.

I'm interested to hear your experiences and the pros and cons for each option.

Thanks.

I think it needs be a fixed number for all teams otherwise the league will get messy pretty quickly.

If you can choose to keep a higher number the good teams will just keep their players while the bad teams will be continually rotating through the crud.

I'm in 7(!!!) different leagues with pretty much different rules in all of them.

If you have a league where you keep all/ a high number of players then like real life leagues, there will be the power teams and the battlers within 2-3 years. But you do get to develop a team and you do have to be more strategic.

Lower numbers of keepers means that if you have a bad draft or if things don't go your way, you can just hopefully draft better the next year. Interest in these leagues can be higher because it is possible for last place from last year to win the following year (with a bit of luck of course!).

So basically,

High number of keepers = more strategy + get to develop your team and ride the bumps more (more rewarding?) + more uneven league ladder over time

Low number of keepers = more even league + 'disposable' players from one year to the next so you don't get as involved with the team + everyone has a shot each year so activity might be higher

My suggestion is that the less teams there are in the league the lower number of keepers there should be. So for a 10 team league, 2 or 3 would be ideal as it encourages player movement. Leagues greater than 15 teams can get away with full keeper rules as the bench guys are genuine bench guys so will be dropped etc. There will be power teams but the draft becomes more crucial.
Maybe increase the number of teams in your league?
