WEST Coast coach John Worsfold expects Daniel Kerr to be 100 per cent fit for round one of the AFL season despite the injury-plagued on-baller being up to three weeks away from joining his teammates in full pre-season training.

Kerr, whose 2010 campaign ended in round four against Essendon when he tore a hamstring tendon off the bone, remains on a strict rehabilitation program less than three weeks before the Eagles' NAB Cup opener against Hawthorn and Fremantle.

Newly-appointed vice-captain Beau Waters, who will miss two weeks of pre-season training following a knee clean out, is the only other Eagle ruled out of the side's opening NAB Cup fixture against Fremantle and Hawthorn on February 13.

Nic Naitanui has been held back from high intensity ball-work because of hamstring tightness, but the ruck prodigy is set to re-join full training next Monday.

Haven't had many injuries this pre-season, it's been good so far.

It was also mentioned that Woosha said that in 3 weeks, Kerr will be at 100% training. Not just returning to the team drills and building up. It will be interesting if that actually pans out.

Isn't the issue that every time Kerr steps up training his hammy gets sore?

So in reality - it could be 3 weeks - or it could mean re-hab starts again in 3 weeks when the full training doesn't go well.

Fingers crossed of course - we need some brilliance

I believe they have been very cautious to date with his training and hope they continue to do so because if they get it wrong it is career over.

I hope he isn't ready for round 1 tbh because that sounds too soon given he hasn't even used the ball yet.

Hopefully he can slowly work his way back into the main training group and be right for Round 4 or so, which from an outside perspective seems more realistic looking at his timeline to date.

Edit: There is a common belief around footy circles that he will never get back and will break down once he starts to up the ante. My gut says he won't get back but my heart is willing it...

If he has soreness in the hammy, I doubt he wasn't touching a ball at all. I'd suspect he would just use his opposite foot. Same like Coxy did when he buggered his foot.

We will see though. Kerr is a star and if anyone can come back from our team without a pre-season, it would be him.

What sort of Kerr?

Kerr during 06/07 or

Kerr during 08/09 or

Kerr during 10 who was fully fit apparently but didnt manage half a season?

Besides... headline is miss leading, he is close to being able to resume full training not playing.

That was my thought when seeing the article, I aint believing anything till he is running around with the number 4 on his back

Often using the other the foot is when you do the hammy.
Eg kick left and the right goes.

I will spew if Kerr plays first game. We started last season with dodgy players and never got going.

22 players who a rearing to go please.

Kerr isn't the most important player in the team anymore , as Kerr - ee said months ago a return to football via East Freo reserves / league is the best option , give places in the Eagles team to players that are fit and ready to play .

Come On Woosha stop pissing in Kerr's pocket let him earn the spot .

An interesting concept new breed. Perhaps that is the best way. Make sure he builds up to it properly. We all know he is AFL class but there is no point in that if he breaks down trying to push himself too hard. May have an extra second or two in WAFL to give himself the time to get proper match fit and strength back in the hamstring

Forward Pocket. I think he earnt his spot when he was part of the greatest midfield of alltime and winning us a premiership. I wanted him fp last year and he wouldnt of tore his hamstring off the bone running along the wing if he was.

I call bullshit.

Until he can start sprinting, change direction and kick the footy 50m's.

Until he can start running crazy subtle angles?

Our track record on being upfront about injuries, especially those involving our better players, is poor so I'm not getting my hopes up.

How dare you insinuate the club would lie to us, that is outrageous!

Woosha said the other day that Waters hurt his knee this week, well I was at training two weeks ago and he was hobbling around then, so they have been trying to manage it for a while now before electing to clean it up with surgery.

True but I recon with Kerr's injury there isn't a lot of history of eliete athletes coming back from it and TBH I don't think anyone really knows how its going to pan out.

Is the club going to come out and inform us with a blow by blow description of any setbacks?

No.

Come closer to round 1 they may consider putting Kerr back on the LTIL so we can elevate Hams but we aren't at that point in time yet.

If Kerr plays again its a bonus.

I don't think we are on our Pat Malone there.

I know of a player who's broken hand was put down as a calf complaint

Agreed, and I share your concerns that Kerr may not play again.

I don't want the club to give us a daily/weekly update on how is injury is progressing but what pisses me off is this he'll be right in 2 weeks or whatever when as you said they really don't know due to the nature of the injury.

I'd prefer them to come out and say that - we don't know when he'll be back but we are doing everything we can to get Kerr to full fitness as soon as possible whenever that may be.

We have a history of not disclosing that players have long term injuries or downplaying the severity of the injury and in some cases continue to select players who should have been rested.

Off the top of my head - Judd, Hunter, Glass, Cox, Hurn, Waters, LeCras have all had periods where they perhaps shouldn't have been playing or were absent for far longer than originally forecast.

I don't think we are on our Pat Malone there.

All clubs do it and coaches like Sheedy and Malthouse turned it into an artform. I also understand why clubs would want to disguise a players true injury as opposition sides would target something like a broken hand, but in a situation like Kerrs the whole football world know he has a hamstring injury so I get frustrated when the club isn't always upfront when it comes to letting us know how long it might be before he returns.

Maybe he will be back by round one, I hope so, but based on our past history I'm sceptical that he'll be back as soon as the club are indicating.

Kerr is like that broken down car on your street that the local Bogan tries to keep on fixing, you know the one with a yellow sticker and different coloured panels....its off to the wreckers sooner than you think.
