From the PAMFC press release:

"The Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club are pleased to announce the appointment of former Richmond Captain Matthew Knights) as full time Football Operations Manager and assistant coach to Stephen Williams.

Knights yesterday signed a two-year contract to be Port’s Football Operations Manager and assistant coach. The major coup is the first significant step in the revival campaign the Magpies are planning to turn around the club’s on-field fortunes in 2003. It is part of a renewed focus on football the Club promised as a result of the highly successful ‘True Believers’ campaign earlier in the year.

Matthew has played 279 AFL games with Richmond, is a former captain and a dual best & fairest winner. He brings to the club a wealth of experience and a real passion for the game.

Matthew will take up his appointment in the middle of October and his wife Carolyn and two young children will join him soon after."

From the sounds of it he wont be playing. Interesting move from both parties, thought from the clubs point of view he'd be better to play (at least next year). From his point of view surely a coaching appointment in the AFL or VFL would be easier on his family

Not so far

This way he gets a look at both coaching and admin and can decide what he likes. Also he is a Mildura fellow so Adelaide is pretty close to home for him.

Plus if the Magpies struggle next year you might still see him pull on the boots.
