Yeah, despite Kobe saying he will come back from this, I don't see it.

When you factor in playoffs, olympics, FIBA, and so forth, Kobe has played the equivalent of between 18 and 19 full seasons worth of basketball.

An achillies injury is a bastard to come back from when you're 21 years old. He'd be 35~ years old when he would be likely to return.

Then you factor in his contract, and whether or not the Lakers would bring him back...

I just don't see it unfortunately.

it is rather apt that the injury happened against the warriors given his warrior status renowned world wide.

i am currently in the northern hemisphere, and word has hit here like a tsunami.

i am too emotional to talk right now

He gets $30mil next season, he isn't retiring.
Will be tough to come back from, he will play through, simply because he will want to go out on his own terms. Don't think he will ever be the same though.

Love or hate Kobe, it's a disappointing sight to see a great player suffer to a serious injury.

If the injury happened to any other player over 30 years of age, you'd doubt they'd be able to come back effectively. But not Kobe. He's the most stubborn, strong-willed player in the league by a long shot.

The recovery timetable is 6-9 months, with the quick end of that recovery coinciding with the start of the 2013-14 season. Does anyone doubt that he'll be working his arse off to make it back in time for the start of next season?...I didn't think so.

Kobe will once again be an important player on a championship-calibre Lakers team. Whether he'll be the central figure on future Lakers teams remains to be seen.

This season saw Bryant drive and dunk a lot more than the past 2 or 3 seasons. How much of that athelticism will be gone now? The good thing with Kobe is that he's not only one of the most competitive players in the league, he's also one of the most intelligent.

His work in the post is indicative of this.
Watch Kobe catch the ball with his back to the basket, his options seem endless:
  • Give a slight shoulder fake to get his defender shading one way, before turning around, raising up and hitting a fadeaway jumper.
  • Back down on the left block, shot fake a jumper over his left shoulder to get the defender in the air, then reverse pivot and lay it in lefty.
  • Turn-and-face, jab-step, jab-step, and depending on the defender's reaction either immediately rise up for the jumpshot or use a quick first step to blow by on the baseline.

The ability, the intelligence: they will still be there in 6 months time. It's the explosive actions: "immediately rising up", the "quick first step", that will be compromised.

But Kobe will adapt - the special ones can. Jordan was effective at age 40. David Robinson seceded to Duncan and Chamberlain was an important role-player on the early 70's Lakers teams. Both players won late-career championships as the second-fiddle.

Kobe will return, and he'll be good too. But will Kobe come back as the second fiddle or hold his spot in the first chair? That is the question. I wouldn't bet against the latter.

Kobe hasn't given us any reason to doubt him in the past. Why should we now?

a fantastic post hans. you should post more often mate! especially the bolded part.

if we start next season without kobe it will be intriguing to see where the ball goes. if we keep pau, he should be no 1 option.

second fiddle isnt in his vocab unfortunaetly. but as he has demonstrated this year he is a willing and excellent distributor of the rock.

lakers need PJ next year even more so now.

What's the likelihood of PJ coming back?

Absolutely shattering for him, really admired his efforts recently and hopefully his team mates can really give their all for him now.

Really cant understand why Dantoni and the coaching staff did not take him out of the game for his own benefit despite Kobe not being willing when he went down in the third quarter, reckon they have a bit to answer for with the management of his role and minutes.

6 to 9 months will have him back in plenty of time to make a run next year but they need to make some huge decisions in the off season and try to get more athleticism into the team as he will be even more limited in that area after this.

Keep at it Mamba, your not a quitter and your determination and persistence is one of your strongest traits !!

Need playoff wins, Lakers are shot in terms of guard depth even with Nash.

He's still an excellent player in terms of footwork so when he comes back i feel like he will still contribute.

I cant see them doing too well, They will need to play at a grinding slow Tempo with Gasol/Howard as their two stars now

Maybe the best thing for this group is to miss the playoff's, might force some necessary decisions to be made.

Nash is one I would consider moving on, makes too many defensive errors, turns it over too much and is not athletic enough to compete with the explosive PG's.

The Spurs didn't want to meet the Lakers in the first round as they knew a fit Kobe could do anything and the pace of that series would of really enhanced the Lakers prospects of causing an upset.

Oh god, Thanks for that, I was pretty devo to hear Kobe hurt himself, but its good to laugh again

Averaging 30 minutes a game with 2.5 Turnovers per game, His assist per turnover ratio at 2.6 isnt too bad either. Defensive errors he's actually been quite good but the athletic part you have a point, However he;s always had trouble with explosive PG

Steve Nash is the least of the Lakers worrys. Dwight was too dumb to play pick and rolls with him and Gasol was out of all sorts and being isolated at mid-range when Nash was playing.

The lakers will load up and aim for Play-offs with or without Kobe, If it means getting rid of Gasol and bringing in a F/A they'll do that. I have a terrible feeling however about Jennings being avalable,

Thats why Nash's teams have always never been able to win when it matters.

Gasol playing well now makes Dwight look serviceable, he should remain before both Dwight and Nash but no doubt he will be made the scapegoat because of his large contract.

Like your intelligent conversation regarding the Spur's also......

The Spurs would obliterate the Lakers.
