Have just searched the Beer Encyclopedia, and no luck. Im searching for any Korean beers that we sell here in Australia (Melbourne) for a present for someone. Any help would be very appreciative.

why do you want korean beer? or do you just want it now that you have discovered that you cant have it??

i suppose u could try emailing dan murphys or some similar company and see if they know.

Had dinner in a Korean restaurant in Lygon Street a couple of months back (very nice too) and tried a stubbie of the native brew. It wasn't bad, not heavy on the flavour, but certainly refreshing (it was a warm night). Anyway, I cannot remember the name of the stuff but I am sure they would sell it to you over the counter if you asked nicely.

EDIT - Just asked the missus...the name of the beer is HITE.

And no, it doesn't need an 'S' to prefix it.

Korean beers!?

I couldn't believe it when I saw this thread.

The beers over here are quite refreshing and lighter than the average Aussie brew though do tend to lack any real quality or flavour. They go down pretty easy and tend to have not as high an alcohol content as your XXXX, Hahn, Tooheys New, VB, etc. Since they are so easy to drink, you can drinks loads in a night, and I never seem to get real hangovers off the beer (soju's a different story).

The main beers of here are Cass and Hite, Korea's answer to Tooheys and VB. There's also Cafri, OB, and a few other ones.

Cafri's probably the best of the bunch - it's got a crisp, light, refreshing taste. Korea's not Germany or the Czech Republic and whilst the beers are pretty easy to down, they do taste kind of light, and lacking in real flavour.

Like sandeano mentioned a Korean restaurant is probably the best (if not) only place to try Korean beer in Melbourne.

the best thing about korean beer is you can buy it at the convienience store and drink it walking down the street 24 hours. shame they dont keep it cold enough. found one place at ilsan beach where it was the correct temperature. cafri and hite are the best and would rival any non emu bitter beer. china also makes good beer.

yobeseo sawf. I love kimchi, a lot of my friends aren't as keen on it though, it's one thing I'll miss when I leave (even though you can it back home nowdays). The convenience stores here are great, they're everywhere, open 24/7 and have cheap booze.

I hear ya brother! :)

I'm in Japan - same thing. Soon I'll post a picture of a vending machine where you can buy all sorts of beer, plus whiskey and sake.

A lot of things in the country suck total ass, but some things like this are awesome :)

Hopefully South Koera and Norf Koera don't go to war.

Technically they're still at war.

The 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice, with neither side able to claim outright victory.

Decades on, the truce is still all that technically prevents North Korea and the US - along with its ally South Korea - resuming the war, as no peace treaty has ever been signed...

As for (South) Korean beer, anyone tried Globe? Pretty cheap at around 35 bucks a slab, though its only available in cans. How's about NeNe, the Korean Fried Chicken chain? I've had it twice now. Expensive, but f*ck it's tasty.
