Still really concerned with how we're kicking the ball in to Kreuzer down at FF. When we kick it to him on top of his head (as we should IMO), its normally kicked to the defender's side of the contest, giving him no chance. If it's kicked to him on the lead it normally falls too short.

We really do need to start improving our delivery in to the F50 towards Kreuzer.

Also, I don't think Warnock should be rested down at FF. He should be rotated between the bench and the ruck. He just can't even get his hands to it down at FF (admittedly due to the delivery at times as well) and when the ball is on the ground he applies little-to-no-pressure.

Thoughts?

does anyone else think kreuzer is getting a rough deal with his arm being chopped in the marking contest? or even holding the mark for a few seconds and not getting paid?

happened against freo on the weekend and I have seen it in a few other games this year as well.

yeah absolutely. i noticed it a few weeks ago for the first time.

Definitely cops a raw deal in terms of chopping and push in the backs.

In saying this he does need to get stronger in the contest.

Between them they took 7 marks on the weekend. Not one was contested. ALL uncontested.

To put in perspective Dean Cox took 13 marks. 6 Contested.
How many would he have taken, as a % when he was 21 years old?

This is where they should be striving to reach, but RW needs to get stronger in the arms and given his frame that can't be done in one pre-season or you wreck his legs again (running with too much weight).

Kreuzer is not a bad contested mark, not sure what his stats are for the year, but he seems to be playing predominantly forward and still learning the role.

The other thing is to take a contested mark your oppnent needs to be next you to.........at times Freo resembled witches hats........bit hard to take a contested mark.

Yeah probably - can we afford to do that in the modern game though?.

Decent tap ruckman but he is just about a liability anywhere else. Hoping he can bulk up a bit over the next few years and provide more of a contest around the ground, mostly in marking contests. A bloke 206 cm tall simply shouldn't get brushed aside as easily as he does.

I dont buy that - I think he is down on confidence kicking for goal so doesnt even really try to mark it.

He looked really good in the final last year in front of goal - he needs to be perservered with and also the delivery needs to be improved to him - we need to play to his strengths - so no nine iron long bombs - we need to kick it low and out in front of him where no defender would be able to do anything but illegally chop his arms.

It's a reasonable point. Kreuze is still coming back from injury but Robbie's lack of marking is a worry. Hampson may have dropped marks but at least he was getting hands on them in contested situations.

Need to somehow merge Robbies tap work with Hammers ability around the ground.

that is probably one down side of his game. for a guy of his size he gets moved in the contest a bit too much. he needs to plant his feet.

i'm sure as he fills out he will be able to throw his weight around more though.

Totally agree. Seems to get the slightest of bumps in the contest and yet moves by a matter of metres as a result.

For mine, Hampson is clearly the worst contested mark out of our three ruckmen. People on this board have extremely short memories.

For most of this season Hampson couldn't catch crabs in a Bangkok brothel.

Stats say otherwise Kades Dad, he actually takes just as many contested marks on average as Robbie, per game.

The thing is that Hampson's stats for Successful Contested Mark vs Attempted Contested Mark ARE probably worse than Robbie's and most others in the AFL. That's because he gets to more contests on average than our other ruckmen.

Once he finds some glue for those hands, he will be a beast.

If Hampson clicks his marking will be an asset.
However Warnock at the moment is a far, far better ruckman.

Which is more important.

And once I climb Mt Everest I'm going to open a McDonalds franchise there.

:D

I've been critical of Hammer since his recruitment... the only thing that finally shut me up was the way he played in the games before he went down with injury.

Not that I'm suggesting he has 'made it' - but he's a damn sight closer to it than I thought he was early in the year.

Fingers crossed for 5 things from our ruck department moving forward:

1. That they all stay on the list for next year and beyond.
2. Hammer tweaks the final deficiencies out of his game.
3. Robbie gains upper body strength and size.
4. Kreuzer takes his game to the next level.
5. THAT THEY ALL STAY INJURY FRIGGING FREE!

I disagree with you. He may not be completing *all* of his marks, but he can take grabs that Warnock has no chance in hell of getting. Not only that but when he misses his marks he is able to stay in the contest and/or put the ball to advantage. He's nowhere near as good as Kreuzer is in this regard but he is better than Warnock.

When Warnock misses a mark it all too often results in an opposition fastbreak (see the Collingwood game where he turned an otherwise good to great game into a performance where his marking inability was one of the determining factors to our loss). Where Warnock has Hammer covered is in his ruck work. He's one of the elites in the game, still learning and will be damn near close to unbeatable when he finishes the maturation process.
