Saw an article in the MX tonight about another American franchise opening here very soon (Krispy Kreme Doughnuts) with 30 stores, first one in Penrith, NSW. Thought I'd get some feedback from some first hand experts. Like anything new I guess they will be a hit at first but then once the novelty dies off then we will have to see. I've never heard of them before.

I'd never heard of Krispy Kreme until I saw this article on the How Stuff Works site. It's a guided tour of one of their stores and expains why the Sepos love them.

I'd give them a try if there was a store here.

as soon as i saw the name (kk doughnuts) i thought that would have to be american, who else is so crap at naming things.

krispy kreme sounds sickeningly full of sugar, feral.

Never had one. Until very recently only the southern states had 'em; us midwestern folk were deprived. My hometown got one about a month after I left.

I tell you what though, you haven't lived until you've had a real glazed donut. I can't remember the last time I had one.

yeah, the name Krispy Kreme sounds like 'heart-attack waiting to happen'.

Just went to KK a week ago after venturing out to our local theme park, Six Flags Great America, to ride our new roller coaster called 'Superman Ultimate Flight' - a "flying" coaster.

KK just entered the Chicago market a year ago or so. Have only had them a few times. I find them far too sweet and without much texture. The varieties, however, are good. Chocolate iced donuts with custard are my favourites. If you go into the store when they are making the donuts (a sign outside the store illuminates when the are making them), you get a free glazed donut. Great ploy to get you to buy more. Get a free 70c donut but spend another $6.99 for a dozen. Dentists love 'em!

I still would prefer the hot jam donuts bought at the footy on a cold and rainy July afternoon!

Once two of us downed 2 dozen of the b@stards (glazed) for dinner. Thats what i think of em.

when fresh (watch for the light!), simply the best doughnuts ive ever had by a long way.

I love pineapple glazed donuts - are they the glazed donuts you are talking about? Or do you mean iced donuts??

Chicago, I totally agree, a bag of hot jam donuts at the footy on a cold winter's day is heaven.

(Krispy Kremes sound awful :( )

What's the big deal with Krispy Kreme?
It's been my observation that American women dig them.

I've noticed that when any of the women in my office bring in pastries for their birthdays, it's usually from Krispy Kreme.
There's a perception that Krispy Kremes are lighter that Dunkin Donuts, stuff from the local bakery, or any other franchise.
As far as being too sweet. No one complains.

{A donut as a babe magnet? [Sheila magnet?] Hmmmm....}

Well those glazed chocolate donuts aren't bad but the name just makes me think of fatty cream filled donuts with crispy icing on the top.

Call me thick but this just sounds disgusting.. normal jam donuts I get at the Vic Market are good enough.

Anyone care to elaborate on the entire reason for this... other than a marketing ploy from a tv show for example? I am open minded enough to listen. :)

---That's the odd thing. They are light, glazed doughnuts. If they make one with cream filling I haven't had one. Then again, I'm just mooching the ones brought to the office.
Management by glazed dougnut Gawd bless America :)

the wynyard store (sydney cbd) opened a few months ago..

and seriously yes... those damn glazed donuts are f*cking great !!!

will they open a store in Melbourne?
my friend in the states tells me the donuts there are amazing.

Great, another place for our already fat-arsed nation to suck in some more shi.te. Fine as a treat, but you just know there will be people out there kreaming themselves to exist on the bloody things.

Way, way too sweet for my likings.

Cheers,

Kasey

KK's aren't just normal donuts!!! They are AMAZING.

I used to live in Texas, and a church there would use Krispy Kreme donuts as a fundraiser because the nearest store was 3 hours away and the queues of cars to get into the church to buy the donuts went for blocks!! (People used to also drive the 3 hours to buy the donuts anyway....!)

I first tasted them in NYC and they are unforgettable. Totally different to the hot donuts from the footy and different again to my other faves, Dunkin' Donuts.

I've been on their mailing list for Australian customers and even though I am in Melbourne, I got a huge package in the mail with an invitation to the Penrith opening (they are going to have a 24 drive thru) and a hat, stickers, the whole thing. They are doing a great job to break into the Australian market.

Can't wait until the Sydney Vs Pies match when I'm going to go out there and stock up!!!!

Something you definitely have to try!!! :)

The Hot Krispy Kremes are quite simply the best doughnuts I have ever had. They box them up straight out of the cooker. I have burned my tongue on them a few times.

Can you people here in Oz who have had them imagine how the hot ones would go down with a Farmer's Union/Master's Mocha?

Words fail me.
