Kurt came 5th in the hand span measurements.

Kid will be a star:p

Big appendages hey? Gibbo better watch out.

Anyway, could someone explain briefly how international scholarship works. If he is a rookie this year, can he play next year? Also, if we don't rookie him this year can we take him in the Draft like as a late pick, like a rookie upgrade?

OK , a few things , he's not on our list atm , at the end of 2013 we have the option to place him on the rookie list or primary list , he's 195 and still growing , he was invited to this yrs combine as an under age player to represent the south pacific ......his testing even had the Hawks recruiting staff suprised ......Shifter today basically stated that this kid is a real talent , and that in truth could be any thing . Also said when you consider he's only been playin 18 mths that he could be anything. I think between his late season form for Sandy and his combine testing he's caught mainy off guard

Free kick?
The money & man hrs spent identifying him, flying him to and from new Zealand, getting him to box hill or hawthorn training
That's no free kick

It wasn't as though the club went "oh, here's a kid, let's get him"
Do you honestly believe that without hawthorns intervention, that he would have been even identified as a potential draftee?

He isn't coming from Gaelic, it's not a case of just seeing a vid

Given the cost of accommodation, insurance, flights, etc, I wouldn't be surprised if hawthorn spent 25k on him, for a player with no garuntee of coming to your club, that's a lot of quid

like any investment (which is what this is ) you have to spend money to make money

there are no guarantees in life, let alone AFL

Why do we have to wait until next year to list him? Is he under age?

Kurt sounds great - am going to follow his progress closely next year and try not to get caught up too much in measurements & test results. While nice they dont mean a thing if the kid cant get the prune.

Aside from Rhys Panui-Leth, another of the Kiwi boys I'm keen on finding more about is Shem Tatupu. Was lucky enough to take the young fella into the rooms after the GC game this year and was standing next to Shem while we were waiting to go in. He was standing next to Joe Ingles who was also there and they were actually the same height (6'8"). Shem is about 4 feet thick and beast of a kid, good bloke too.....

Check out the link from HFC website talks about both Rhys & Shem. Was from Feb 2011, both only 15 then which is why they wouldnt have come up on the recruitment radar - still too young....:thumbsu:

Does anybody know if the big Shem can play?

Don't we have to hand him over to the Saints now that they're on the NZ bandwagon?? ;)

Here is a quote off the Hawks site that mentions his ability in the 2012 u16 champs, looks like we might have another one here is all goes well -

"...Shem has shown fantastic development since joining Hawthorn, with evidence being his performance in the 2012 AFL U16 National Championships where he was named MVP for the South Pacific team.

Tatupu possess great physical strength, marking ability, speed and agility for his size. This makes him a hard match up for any backman.

He is eligible to be selected as an International Rookie Listed player at the end of season 2013."
The guy is all of 15 - 16 and 194cm and 96KG :eek::eek::eek:

Get some endurance into this guy and he is a ready made KPP MONSTER. Seems he plays forward, maybe turn him into a backman or could he be our replacements for buddy in 5 or 6 years time? Hope he sticks at AFL and stays with the Hawks

No wonder the Saints are all over NZ, with the Pelican on board.

Clearly an advantage of being a wealthy club is being able to take trips to Ireland and NZ, pay for flights back and forward, board them at private schools and keep the local NZ and Irish clubs happy.

Could not see Port or Bulldogs etc having the resources to do this. Every supporter and member is responsible for the chance to get a International player.

WELL DONE ALL

I bet we spend more than that assessing potential draft picks.

I think given his progress and athleticism he will be primary listed. Don't want other clubs getting in his ear!

People have been talking about our need to recruit young KPP players in the List management thread - where it might seem we have already 2 hidden away (Shem and Heatherley) who could fill that future need on our radar.

Good thinking outside the square by the Hawks. The other advantage this is for the Hawks is that if these players start playing regular games for the Hawks,it could prove a boon in NZ for the following of the Hawks by NZ folk. And remember a lot of NZ'ers migrate to melbourne for work - so if they already have interested in the Hawks, this could then again boost our supporter base in Melbourne and Australia/NZ.

It can be a multi prong bonus - for players outside the draft and also size of supporter base. Innovative and progressive thinking by the Hawks management once again.

Gee whiz, the thought of these boys developing into AFL footballers and playing for the Hawks is exciting, both sound like beasts of players, last Sat was a massive let down but one thing that I have the upmost faith in is the work that this footy club is doing off the field, lots of good stuff and forward thinking going on and im loving it

The Hawks look like they have put a good plan in place to secure talent while GWS and GCS have been setting up. Nice work HFC.

Can another Club steal them from us next year?
They can get in there ear ala the Stubbs situation , but it means the player/players will still have to roll the dice and enter the draft. Truth is with the amount of work we have put in I can't see any of the boys walk'n , especially Kurt , he's been around the club and players for some time now and no sought has a repaw with thew club .

This guy makes Shane Mumford look like a midget.:thumbsu:

repaw eh! Sounds like something the Tigers or Cats players get post season

This is all very pleasing to read. The Sheminator looks like a beast, hope he has skills to match his size. Gee, 94 kilos at that age. Schoey was listed at 193 and 90 KG for 2012, to put that into perspective. It looks like there has been some serious planning for the future going in the background. I do enjoy this time of year, we always seem to have a lot of good stuff going on.

Wasn't Kurt and the whole NZ thing one of Pelchen's lateral thoughts?

I missed half of the conversation on AFL Radio but they mentioned about Kurt Heatherly is really something special and well done to Hawthorn of picking him up.
