I heard that the storyline had to undergo some dramatic changes before the series made it to air on television.

Apparently, in the original script the lead character was gay, and the show was to be known as "Kyle KY".

since its on abc family here (which is partly owned by same people that bring you the 700 club, they might have said something to abc about the story line, but who cares, abc family shows stuff that the 700 club people might not like).
