Well this is the time where I become a expert pundit once again (tisk tisk) and predict the ladder for State league 09.
Anyone who has their thoughts, or wants to predict something simliar or different, place it here. Note that this is a Final 6 competition
  1. Burnie: Good solid side that are cherry ripe to blossom further
  2. Launceston: A side that is consistent and will remain that way for 09.
  3. Glenorchy: Will certainly sneak under the radar of most clubs, despite their losses
  4. Clarence: Handy inclusions of Geappen B and Setchell, but they can't do it on their own.
  5. South L'ton: Young players that are around 50 games experience equals exciting games ahead.
  6. Hobart: It's a case of which Hobart side turns up on the day for me.
  7. North Hobart: Too many losses and not enough gains to cover the holes.
  8. Lauderdale: Will win more games in their back line, not their forward line.
  9. Devonport: Not enough up forward, maybe 4 wins...
  10. North L'ton: I'll probably get lynched for this one, but who are North's main players? They seem to recycle as much as I do in a fortnight.
Positions 6 and 7 are a toss up between Hobart and North Hobart.

I cant make prediction from this far away.
I do ferverntly hope that the gap between top and bottom is not as big as it got at times in the former statewide league.

Sadly, crowds will probably be similar to the final years of that league. I hope not, but very few people give a rat's about anything that is not AFL level.

What about the comments in the Advocte today from Devonport coach Errol Bourn. He has stated they will finish bottom 3. Really suprising comment. Good way i suppose to take the heat of the one self. They have picked up over 10 of the best senior players from East Latrobe Penguin and Ulverstone. And their only reported losses in the paper were Lowe and Stubbs. What about Taylor, Lowe, Fulton,Smith,Morgan,Fagan,Sheehan,Shaw Oneil and more. Maybe if someone from Devonport had made the effort to call them they may have commited. Commented that they want to provide the best young players in the distric the opportunity to play at the best level. Yet they have not signed up 1 single player to play in their under 19s. Peter Fulton was their lynch pin to keep their under age players and they made no effort to keep him. Spreyton had 42 at training last night. Lowe and Fulton who is as fit as he was before he went to Canberra in the early 90s are leading by example on and off the ground.

hmmmm i from a players point of view......i think

1.Burnie- already strong and picked up more, reports all round team!
2.Launceston- Best backman and key forward in comp to go with midfeild.
3.Glenorchy- lost some but have alot of depth will be there abouts.
4.Clarence- thurley will win the tsl b&f and they will have a crack.
5.Lauderdale-will surprise, young team that have gained some big names.
6.North Hobart- lost afew but have good juniors
7.South Launie- young, will be close with n/h, lauderdale & hobart.
8.Hobart- picked up some depth, what they lacked last yr. between 5-8
9.North Launie- no talls, alot of runners.
10. Devonport- ??? no reports.

May as well play the finals now and be done with it.

Difficult to make predictions but I think top 4 of
Launceston
Burnie
Clarence
Glenorchy
Then it gets more difficult, however I think it could go as,
North Laun
North Hbt
South Laun
Lauderdale
Hobart
Devonport
I know this is all a guess but Launceston should dominate given the number or high paid stars they retain, Plapp will lead a determined Burnie to runners up again, Clarence have bought quality with Thurley, Setchell, Gaeppen, Blight etc, Glenorchy have lost experience & late change of coach but have good kids, the others remain works in progress.
Big question is why AFL Tas have done so little marketing? Do they want to attract sponsors/supporters or not?

Well I reckon the top 3 will be Launceston, Burnie and probably a toss-up between Glenorchy & Clarence.
The rest will be pretty much making up numbers if what you hear around the place is true.
I certainly don't see the Devonport's, the Hobart's, the North Launceston's challenging for a finals spot at the moment. All have a lot of work to do.
I believe the mid range "quite competitive" teams will be South Launceston, North Hobart and Lauderdale.

Yes I'm wondering the same thing.
It's been extremely flat, right at a time when it needed to be pumped up at a rate of knots.
It's all well & good to bring in these changes, but without any credible publicity or any sort of image it counts for nought.
I don't get time to watch a lot of TV but, we're only 16 days out from the start of the season and there's been no TV ad's promoting this at all and not a heck of a lot in the rest of the media.

I think the roster crowds will be quite poor for some clubs, yeah.
I wonder if they'll release the crowd figures in the media or only the better ones?
I think some of the derby matches up North will drag in some good crowds, but I do worry about what kind of crowds will turn up down South.
New Norfolk would've been good for bigger crowds, shame they're in such a financial mess.
I certainly can't see Hobart, Lauderdale, Clarence, North Hobart or Glenorchy dragging in more than 1,000 to a match very often.
Not this year anyway.
Maybe it's something that has to show decent re-establishment before the punters get on board again, after all, 9-12 years is a long time and people who have drifted away find other things to keep them occupied and it'll be a huge task trying to coax them back.

I would go with:

1. Launceston
2. Clarence
3. Burnie

Comfortable ahead of...

4. Glenorchy
5. South Launceston

Fighting for the last spot in the final six will be...

6. North Hobart
7. Lauderdale
8. North Launceston

And well and truly at the bottom...

9. Hobart
10. Devonport

They AFL Tasmania don't see marketing as a priority.

Will most likely be the same as any competition in the first few weeks. Crowds will come out for a look, see what they think and if the league is competitive they'll return, if not they won't.
Not saying they'll be late 80's stage, but they'll probably be OK early.

Might be all for the Season Launch...?

my ladder
clarence- picked up alot of guns
launceston- still be strong will start slow
burnie- good all round team will be strong
glenorchy- will still be stron good depth
north hobart- still will be there abouts got some talent
north launceston - may be a little small but will win there fair share
hobart- will be competitive
devonport- still win games good youth wont be as bad as predicted
lauderdale - may struggle not real sure
south launceston- toss up not real sure no key targets up forward

top 4 teams wont be much between these sides then the rest will fight amonst themselves.. Devonport may cause a few upsets because of there youth and enthusiaism.......
Hopefully this comp will take off..
This compition is needed everyother state has this type of comp its time we made it work

well these players either want to play at the top level or not why do players always have to be chased? young kids and old players only goto the country for the coin nothing more nothing less?
are these players going to make an impact in the TSL anyway i think not

well im not sure why they have put them anywhere near the top 6
they haven't picked up anyone!!!
dev beat them the other week in a practice match with not much of a side

Burnie - will win it by a country mile. Plappy is fit (injury free) as his afl days, and to go with the unbelievable line up they had they pick up the crowd pulling stevenson and the small forward capable of a 10 goal haul darren banham! Delivery from their midfield with brown, smith and murphy will be class and the kid rodney eade wanted to delist for being "mentally ******ed" jesse wells will hold any big forward down. Including derbashyre.
Clarence - The Clarence devils will be well coached by budgie Geappen. Would love to see the look on the taggers faces on a thursday night when they are told to run with Setchell or Thurley.
Launceston - Have looked patchy in practice matches, and will struggle on smaller grounds, but play a good zone and their list is still awesome.. Noticed they have a sudanese or something ruckman who would be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!
North Hobart - Controversial one, but things arent as bad as it looked for the demons. A skilled youthful running team, coached well. Kenny Hall, Rhys Long, Olly Divenuto and Geappen all in the guts will destroy lesser sides.
Glenorchy - Lost a lot, and have a ****** as a coach.
Lauderdale - Match winning utility Hooter degooyer as coach, as well as the flexible Richter. Williamson will be exposed however, without the ball being delivered on a silver platter like at clarence, the bombers skills are all round embarrassing.
Hobart - Will be fit, as Toddy Lewis is a fitness freak and have a few handy pick ups, but still lack depth.
South L'ceston - Just going on past years, but they will still be pretty young and easily intimidated by the powerhouses.
Nth Launny - From what i've heard will be bottom two, but who knows?
D'port - Pretty disappointing to see the demise of the once strong pies..

It's going to be a good comp in about 5 years, but where will all the money come from with no crowds due to the lack of good MEDIA COVERAGE.. I might boycott the mercury and buy the advocate all year!

***** Can i add that my predictions are based on the teams only.. The strange roster set up means some teams play others only once etc which obviously is an advantage if you only play the best sides once. Therefore that will certainly affect the ladder.

Not overly strange? play each team in your area (north/south) twice. home and away.
and each team in the opposite area once. 3 teams at home and 3 away.
18 games.

can see the reasons behind it i s'pose.. add 2 rounds and everyone plays everyone twice. 20 rounds. but a lot more travel. mariners pumped north hobart at NHO today

Wouldn't need to add two rounds. Ten teams, which means nine opponents to play twice - but, yes, its been done for travel reasons.
It is disappointing, but understandable.

... except there are 5 teams in each region, not 6. So it's play each team in your region three times plus each team in the opposite region once except for one of those whom you play twice.

E.g. Lauderdale play Clarence, Hobart, North Hobart and Glenorchy 3 times, Launceston twice and North Launceston, South Launceston, Burnie and Devonport once.

Which begs the question why launch a half hearted roster.. if you are going to do something this big, may as well do it right... the rostering looks like its going to have a huge bearing on the TSL finals..
