Im most likely going to put XP or linux on the notebook and if i stay with vista im upgrading to either 1g or 2g of ram.

did you check ebay?

as for the laptop, what do you plan to be using it for.
Porning, webbing, gaming, office, or all?
don't lie now ;)

and you are much better off with an acer or dell, so much more reliable than compaq's, and better tech support.

best thing about ebay is you can buy a lower cpu laptop for usually 200 cheaper than the rest, even more, and then when you have it, spend up to 100 upgrading the chipset to something much better, and its roughly the same.

as for graphics cards, you really don't need anything extremely powerful because most mobile gpu's will play most games. but if you want to play half-life 2 and other newer games, then spend the money on a desktop computer.

If you're porning I'd recomend about 250 GB for the hard drive. 80 just don't cut it now days, what with all the high def quality and what not.

250gb are you kidding me!?
i would have 500gb in a raid with redundancy just in case you lose some or one gets corrupted :p

I'm only going to be using word, excell and internet explorer. Windows media player or itunes will be used as well.

it something for me to take notes on during lectures.

Maybe a bit of pr0n

got the basic dell vostro laptop for about $650 (make sure u look for discount codes online, saved me about $30) and that has a similar hard drive but 1gb ram, only has Celeron processor though. Dual Core is much better apparently but we only needed it for fairly basic work. it seems to be running alright for the time being. Also, it has XP pre-installed. screen is good, touchpad seems fairly responsive, sound is fine. pretty solid little unit for <$700.

Thought about it but i really dont want a celeron. I was using a laptop at dich smith with a celeron and vista and it couldnt run notepad. So dual core in minimum.

do you need to run vista?

i have a dell inspiron 6000 that i got off ebay for 500, its over 2 years old, 1.6ghz mobile chipset, runs almost all of the games and apps i play.
i can do 3d modelling and animation with this computer. gaming, porning etc.

besides you shouldn't run vista on a laptop - its just going to suck the guts out of it.

You are so full of it. Vista works relatively well on a 1.6GHz Celeron with 1gb of RAM.

Any dualcore with 1gb of RAM minimum will handle Vista with anything else to throw at it. Your anti-Vista posts are absolute ****.
