Hey, need to replace my onl monitor and get a new one, and id really appreciate any advice anone could give me.

Im looking at a 17" Benq LCD monitor that I can get for $650. It is $150 less than RRP, but I have heard bad things about LCD monitors, such as a bad refesh rate and a defect that can cause some pixels to stay a random colour permanaintly.

Is it worth the few extra hundred dollars to get an LCD screen over an old flatscreen tube?

"It depends" :)

Each of them have advantages and disadvantages, which I'll try to get into here...

LCD - Pros: Smaller footprint, Clearer and sharper images at its native resolution, less power consumption, no flickering, usually don't require as much in the way of adjustments of the image

CRT - Pros: More likely to have more accurate colours, Cheaper, No lag, wider viewing angle

For graphics work, I know a lot of people stick with CRTs because of the more accurate and consistent colours over a wider viewing angle. Gamers also tend to stay away from LCDs because of the lagging issue, but the newer ones are a lot better.

I find that LCDs are a little more pleasant to look at over the long term, but any problems in the image tends to be more prominent on an LCD.

Actually at home, I work on both - doesn't really bother me.

some feedback for what it is worth

I have a 19" LCD at work - it rocks, I find I do not have eye strain or a headache at the end of the day

At home I have an 18" widescreen LCD - very happy with it. As for price I bought it at the Camberwell Computer Swap Meet last Sunday for $650

Both screens can rotate between portrait and landscape orientation.

I like the minimal footprint of the units. They are easy to move around etc.

Plus if the screen is measured 19" I get 19" viewable image unlike CRT if it is measured 19" I only get about 16.5 " viewable image

Good Luck

Yes I want to buy a lcd T.V but have been put off by the fact that it has a slow refresh rate. The worst thing is the companys don't even rate the refresh rate, I guess they want to try and hide the fact that it is a problem.

Thanks for your help guys. I suppose il buy it, I need it for my Multimedia couse so the possible innacurate colours and slow refresh rate might cause a bit of problems, bit iv seen it in action and it doesnt seem all that bad i suppose. Hopefully the fact that its a current model wil minimise these.

Thanks again.

I just bought a Sony 17 inch, and I am as happy as a pig in excrement :)

The refresh rate is perhaps a little slower than my CRT, but I can still play Enemy Territory with not a problem at all. And its small, its light, the clarity is amazing...it kicks backside :)

i have a benq 17 inch

more viewing area, some have direct digital input if this helps.

something else i noticed was that the hyper theading graphics chip gives better color quality than my old 64 meg graphic card.

all in in all have been quite happy

at work we have a couple of good screens on special

phillips 15"

lg 15 :

philips widescreen as well17"

look for the dot pitch the higher the better

inbuilt speakers are lower quality than external ones

and a smaller trim around the lcd screen makes it look bigger than it is (have a look at the sony monitors with thick black trim:rolleyes: ugly

cheers mighty mick
