With you. Eight looks a bit much. Presumably the club is aiming to supplement the obvious senior leaders with some new blood.

At least we have a natural, stand-out captain, both on and off the field.

Interesting to see Ibbo in there. Most of the others are either obvious on field leaders or appear to have natural leadership qualities. Don't really see Ibbo in either of those categories, but I don't know much about his behaviour around around the club

Would have liked to see Roger or Grover in there as they are both very respected senior players and also as indigenous leaders at the club - especially given that MJ was a part of the leadership group this season (and now isn't for obvious reasons)

Mayne/Ibbo seem to be seen as pretty good role models for the 17/18/19 yo players and MDB shows loads of courage that most young players - and even some senior players - would have to have so he is inspirational to them

Pav, Sandi, Duffield, Mundy and Elvis are all obvious choices as well - basically the best senior players (Grover a bit stiff - maybe should be there ahead of Duff)

Good spread of leadership, though it's screaming for an indigenous player like Roger/Grover (as mentioned earlier)

Good to see De Boer in there but a few too many in the group for my liking. Personally much prefer to see a captain with another 3-4 in the group but good to see we've got some young leadership coming through.

I agree, it's awesome seeing him there. He has played 2 years now in the seniors, but has only JUST been upgraded from the rookie list. So that is a sensational effort, a fantastic story and a real confidence builder for him going forward. I think his goal kicking yipes are behind him after a fantastic finish to 2010.

I think he's just very low key and professional in the way he goes about it. I personally expect a break out year from him this year in the midfield, maybe not to the extent of Mundy in 2010, but a breakout year all the same. I'm surprised to see him in the leadership group, but not disappointed at all.

Long time reader, first time poster.

Firstly, it's great to see De Boer rewarded for his efforts. Certainly a terrific on-field leader when it comes to throwing his body on the line for the sake of the team.
Also, he's an intelligent guy and intelligence often translates to how effectively one can communicate with others, a quality that is essential for any sort of leadership.
Would love to see the faith the club has bestowed upon him translate on the field, i.e. getting into the guts and becoming a real grunt player in the midfield.

Second, Mayne's a bit of a club goofball and obviously is pretty keen to acquaint himself with most of the draftees (as evidenced by the 'Mayne minutes' segment on FTV, albeit one that makes most cringe). It's the sort of attitude that is really valuable when it comes to integrating younger players into the club lifestyle.

Finally, I do have my question marks over Ibbotson. However, the Irish excursion seems to have done him the world of good and if he's keen to lead from the front as an in-and-under player than I wish him all the best.

I was kind of hoping Suban would be in there. He has got just that little bit of mongrel in him. Plus he did captain Vic country. Not sure what he is like off field though. He would also need to recapture and then develop some of his first year form.

My suspicion is that he would have declined (were it offered) so that he could concentrate on cementing his place in the starting 22.

Agree. Suban may have a lot of potential as a leader but he is not a walk up starting 22 yet - not far off it, but he has things to work on and could probably expect a stint in the magoos if he loses his form and focus during the season. Too early to put additional responsibilities on him at this stage of his career.

Also, I'm not at all unhappy with Ibbo being in the leadership group - just wan't someone I saw in that role. I hope he does really well.

MJ never really struck me as much of a natural leader anyway.

Good player but... I dunno... he just sort of flows with the game, rather than standing up and forcing things to happen.

Agree!

I don't even like him playing behind the ball, I think he plays his best when he has to work to get the ball.

Stoked to see DeBoer in there too. Besides the obvious (Hill and Fyfe) he's the newbie I've got the biggest mancrush on at the moment. Love the way he goes about his work.

Good to hear re: the youngsters in Maybe & deBoer. Hopefully this translates to further onfield dominance.

There were probably a few stiff to have missed out but there's plenty of experience in that leadership group that won't be there forever, they'll get their opportunity but for now they're better off focussing on their own game.

TBH there would have been quite a few I'd have had before Ibbo but hopefully his new responibility encourages him to take the next step; he needs to.

Or maybe you need to forget the first quarter of his season and acknowledge he had a very good 2010. He was played out of position early but once he settled at half-back he was very good. Was rewarded with a trip to Ireland for a reason.

Agree, yeah. He seems to have taken everything for granted so far in his career; that may be harsh though, but that's how I see it.

de Boer, just rewards for all the hard yakka he's put in. Top bloke and wish him nothing but success.

Ibbo and Mayne are my surprises, but pleasant surprises. I didn't even consider Mayne, but he deserves the respect he obviously has from the Club.

Duffman?

Why do the indigenous players need a player in the leadership group ?. They are Aussies and human beings, same as Pav, Sandi, De Boer etc.

Did we have a Croat on the leadership panel for a young Pav, a Goofy for Kepler, a local yokel for Hase ?.

We are all Aussies in the footy game.

Just proves how highly De Boer's contribution to the club is respected. Put that down as a win for the "workers" over the "pretty boys".

Let's not go there.

Who cares?

If any kid needs some guidance, aboriginal, albino, gay, straight, disabled and victorian, they'd be better off with a mentor.

Scott Thornton could fulfill a couple of those roles.

Matt De Boer is a fair inclusion and someone everyone would look up to. Not sure if it has been said but no Nick Suban. A lot of of people peg him as a future captain but De Boer overtook him this year.

Re Suban - agree that he is probably happy to establish himself in the 22. Leadership group is a snapshot in time. The future leaders of the club aren't necessarily there. Thinking Mr Fyfe in particular, but there may be a couple of others.
