I guess on one front it means Clarko is firmly ensconced at Hawthorn for the foreseeable future. So the succession down our way might be years and years off, and no guarantees at that. This scenario would, in theory and the little I know of it, give Cameron a definite timeframe for becoming a senior coach.

If we have learnt anything from the Collingwood saga... no need for rock solid succession plans. If Leon Cameron wants to persue a senior coaching career in the very near future unfortunately he wouldn't get that opportunity at Hawks (unless something goes horribly wrong for Hawks on field).

If the Hawks release Cameron for a SNR coaching position in 2013, id be okay with that... I hope they keep hold of Cameron if he is only looking at another assistant role! I think he adds a lot to our clubs coaching panel!

I also so think that Cameron getting a senior gig would help enhance the clubs coaching credentials, Hardwick already a senior coach, Cameron on the verge, it is a big tick for our coaching dept and also makes the club an attractive option for prosepctive assistant coaches who hold aspirations of a senior AFL coaching role :thumbsu:

It also helps renews the coaching panel with fresh ideas and approaches. I wouldnt want to see changes every year or even many changes at that - but there has to be a certain amount of renewal in the coaching department, to make sure the situation does not become staid and that others that have been there for some time are challanged by new individuals, which helps refresh them as well.

Be disappointing to lose him. Seems to have added a lot to our coaching department. Interesting move for him to move to GWS in this type of role. I guess it gives him some certainty around his future position. Good oppurtunity really. Assistant for the next couple of years and get to take over just as they are about to peak.

Good luck to him, hope he goes well. It's a shame he'll miss our flag next year though (fingers crossed). Bridesmaid again

Hope Bassett is in line.

I'd expect to lose Adam Simpson in 2013...need to find replacements for him

Signed at GWS according to the Age. Will be senior assistant next year, and then senior coach for the following 3 years. Hate to lose him, but I'm also happy for him that he's landed a great position, and not stuck trying to fix Port Adelaide. Port in big trouble now, no one wants to go there.

Congratulations Leon Cameron. I feel you have done a great job here this year, and being honest there was no way we were going to be able to hold on to him as an assistant coach.

how do you guys feel about cameron breaking his contract with two years to run, to be an assistant at another club?

Why go to Port and watch their mass exodus when you can go to GWS and enjoy building the club more or less from the ground up while knowing how good their draft position is going to be for the next couple of years.
He will more or less be coaching them next year anyway as witnessed with Chocko this year.

Smart move Leon and well deserved...I wish you all the best!

Under the circumstances you can't begrudge him, it's the opportunity to eventually be a senior coach, it's a golden opportunity because he will be taking over when that core group of players will be getting towards 100 games, not a bad time to take over, they will be nearly ready to push for finals

The Australian are reporting that Cameron will be announced tomorrow.

"PORT Adelaide is a club in disarray again, with Greater Western Sydney swooping in and snatching coach Leon Cameron just a day before he was expected to take the job in South Australia.

The Giants will announce today that the 40-year-old Hawthorn assistant will take over the assistant coaching role next year under Kevin Sheedy."

Congrats Cameron. Great coach who has done a fantastic job in the past few years and it was a matter of time for him to be elevated to a senior role (albeit in the future).

Who can we get to replace him?

He was always going to be poached from us at the end of the season, so we would have been looking for his replacement for some time.

Many coaches around the country would love to work at Hawthorn. Looks great on the CV ;)

I'm sure we've found a very good replacement for LC.

The club made it fairly clear in advance that it would have no problem releasing him from his contract if had the opportunity to take a senior position. It's not accurate to say he broke the contract, it was a mutual dissolution of the agreement. I think the club's position was that it didn't want any serious discussions or interviews while our season was alive, and LC respected that 100%. It's also not accurate to say he left us to be an assistant at another club. He left us to be the senior coach of another club. He's actually contracted to be the senior coach of GWS from 2014 until the end of 2016.

So basically I'd say that the premise of your question is false in both of its implied statements.

The Hawks have already moved on. I was at Waverley Park for lunch today and none other than Brett ratten walked into the Hawks nest for a meeting upstairs.
Leon Camerons replacement?
