He did a bit not enough , play him in the pocket and hope that can occasionally pinch-hit in the midfield.
His uniqueness is needed in a side that has too many similar types.

BTW This thread is a fly trap for the imbecile opposition supporters who stalk our board.

He's just marking time in 2005 before Rusling and/or Egan take his spot in 2006. His career is genuinely at the crossroads.

He'll never make the grade as a midfielder, the best we can hope is that he plays to his potential as a dangerous goal sneak.

I get so frustrated with a) our coach and b) our supporters, when they think that this guy can play in the middle.

FFS, he's our equivalent of a Matera / Medhurst type leading forward pocket. He's proved that he's quite competent in that role. So why the bloody hell can't we play him there??

He looked Ok against Freo accross half forward, but even Stephen Patterson fluked the odd good game in the midfield. Leon's success record in the middle is something like 1 of 30.

Forward pocket or bust!!!!

just an outsiders view: to erratic dosent work hard enough defending a very similar player to milne from saints except milne kicks a heap more goals to hide his deficincies
I'd reckon Leon would kick as many goals as Milne would, if he wasn't played on the wing so much.

He offers nothing as a midfielder, but Malthouse persists in trying him in this position. An MM stubborness trait (other example: J Clo as a forward!).

MM should cut his losses and play Leon where he belongs; either in the forward 50, or at Williamstown.

Absolutely 100%.

Leon will not be on our list come 2006. Sad, but true.

Oh and despite what all those really cool Geelong fans think, he's not my favourite play at all. :)

Seems to do some speccy things against us, then off to the VFL until we meet again. Annoying!

Bzzzz.

The midfield experiment has failed.
MM should play Leon where he is best suited - as a goal sneak.
Instead of trying to learn the art of a midfielder Leon should be concentrating on becoming a crumbing forward.

And when I say a crumbing forward I don't mean a leading forward pocket (eg. Matera) because he will never be a main target. Tarrant, Rocca and any other tall player will claim that spot. So all he will end up doing is busting a gut leading into space only for the ball to go elsewhere, collecting only a few kick per game and continue the constant threat of being dropped.

In marketing you should always use your USP (Unique Selling Position) - i.e. what you have that your competition doesn't.
Well Leon's USP is his pace. If he can learn to read the play and use his pace to run away from his opponent to make a one-on-one marking contest (eg. Tarrant v fullback) into a two-on-one scenario then his value to the team will be irreplaceable.
