Reading 7 pages of Shopping list thread was depressing - it appears an enormous mindset is what established players we can get. If we trade - let's trade for early draft picks (which we haven't had) and look at what quality players we might get in the Draft.

This will help us more long term. I've considered where blokes will go- obviously we need to identify players who may slip or be available for our later picks.

I'd hope to get a:
-Tom Bellchambers(Tassie)/Ben McEvoy (Murray) as a young ruckman.
-Ashley Arrowsmith(Calder), Troy Wright (Eastern) as athletic good kicing midfielder/half forwards.
-Key backman which is so important is the hard one- would be nice if we could get a Lachie Henderson (geelong) or Alex Rance (WA)- but would be lucky for them to be around at pick 11. Too bad about Daniher.

Any thoughts?

It really depends what happens at the end of trade week. I don't really see the point in drafting a Ruck/Forward. If we lose Jolly, we need someone that can deliever in the Ruck straight away, so we'll go for Wood, I'm sure.. We already have a ruck prospect in Currie that's probably not going to be a factor for a few years (though he can help out occasionally).

On the other hand, we really need to find a KPP prospect after all these years drafting midfielders in the first round. Rance will be great, but I doubt that he'll drop this far and he's a WA boy, so we have to be fairly careful. Henderson is more a forward prospect I think, with injury cloud. I would go for a safter option like Collier, who I think have all the right characteristics (from what I heard) to fit into our team.

I actually agree with you on that one. Why not trade a premiership player for a top 10 pick. We desperatley need an injection of quality youth, a KPP more than anything. I hope we dont trade for mediocre players such as Miller and the like.

McEvoy will go top 5 or so. We're no chance of getting him at all. He's seen as the next best tall behind Kreuzer. Rance may be snapped up the the Dockers or Eagles. He along with Palmer and Mastern look like going top 10.

The only players that would fetch a top ten pick for us is Goodes, C.Bolton (if we're lucky) and O'Keefe - who are the nucleus of our side and I can't imagine them being traded. Saints are the only ones that would pay pick 9 for Jolly, but Jolly seems to be staying.

It's extremely unlikely that we'll get a top 10 pick via trading.

We are committed to keeping our first pick at 11 and have agreed to draft Bird with our third.

When we are talking about trades we are only talking about swapping a current listed player or using our second pick for somthing like Tenace, Miller or Johnston.

There is no doubt we could do with a strong big bodied FB or Key Position defender so Miller has some appeal, but our second round maybe slightly too high.

As for Johnston, he would fit the bill as a skilled by foot midfielder that we desperately need. Tenace has pace but his disposal has always let him down so I don't know if he is going to add anything that we particularly need.

If they stick to using 11, taking Bird with our third and trading our second for a structural element that is needed now, I don't have an issue with that.

Why? What is the merit in doing this in a year in which the draft is purportedly quite weak?

What is the point in throwing away established players to get speculative draft picks? After all, the only players we are likely to be able to trade for early picks are those that are young and have demonstrated they are AFL-standard players. They are the players that we should be building our next tilt at a flag around - not sending them away only to try to replace them with unproven kids.

you underrate your players if you think only 3 would be top ten picks.

Goodes, C.Bolton and O'Keefe. In my opinion, these are the only 3 players that would fetch a top ten pick for us - but Frankly, they are worth much more than that to us.

Jolly is the only other player that might fetch a top 10 pick, if that team is desperate for a ruckman and again in my view, he's worth a lot more than a 12-15 pick.

But I don't see anyone else that would fetch our players with a top 10 offer. WE rate our players, it's just that no one else does. And that's why I hate trading away players, since we probably won't get much in return.
