I'm not having a go at Ling here, but interesting comparison statistically and what the papers have to say.

Yesterday's statistics:
James Bartel:
  • 16 kicks, 15 handpasses, 84% effective (13 contested possessions)
  • four marks
  • six inside 50s
  • eight clearances
  • three frees for, no frees against
  • six tackles
  • three assists
Cameron Ling
  • 11 kicks, 11 handpasses, 68% effective (9 contested possessions)
  • three marks
  • three inside 50s
  • two clearances
  • no frees for, one free against
  • four tackles
  • one assist
Herald Sun Best: Ling, G Ablett, Mackie, Bartel...
The Age Best: G Ablett, Ling, Bartel...

Ling seems to catch the eyes of those in the media, Bartel doesn't (he also had the highest Champion Data ranking of any player in the League this round, and is currently second overall this season).

difference is Ling is a media whore :p

Ling is one of the most accessable Geelong players to the media. BFTG, Footy Show and other football shows pick him up so he is seen on the outside as the face of Geelong (the unattractive one too) which means the media (Herald Sun, Age e.t.c) will pick him up more than Jimmy Bartel who still look pretty shy in interviews e.t.c

I just hope the umps notice what Bartel has brought to the table the last 3 weeks, 111% sensational football (7-9 votes IMO)

If you have a spare 10 bucks on ya.. throw it on Bartel for the Brownlow! Would get good odds atm.

Some players who play well every week don't seem to get noticed by media nuff nuffs because they don't do something spectacular. Some can do a few things that get noticed [i,e a Davey type tackle from behind] and get the attention.Media people are d*ck brains when it comes to picking best players.Surely last weeks NAB RS decision proved that.

I'm still trying to workout how Franklin was listed in the best players in at least one paper.

I'm not sure what you're exact complain is here, unless you think the 'bests' in the paper are ranked. Bartel gets a fair bit of media attention (Cometti practically creamed his pants talking about him last week) and he's undoubtedley become more comfortable with the media (his interview post-match with Melbourne was fine). Ling's been in good form, though, and he's undoubtedley the best Geelong player with the media - he's good in 'serious' mode but is also something of a cult figure thanks to stuff like Before the Game. But having said all that, both played well and both deserved to be in the bests.
