Hi what I was thinking is we could have Ling in the forward line instead of seeing him stuffing around around the ground like he did today. In under 18s he played full forward and I think if we played him in the forward line chappy, ablett and stokes can play midfield more. what does everyone think?

Hmmmm I think his probably to slow to lead forward and his kicking for goal isn't the greatest.

His kicking for goal is actually pretty good. He didnt really 'stuff' around up the ground today either, i thought he was solid on Bourgoyne (spelling?)

Maybe rest him upforward like they do with Bartel and (used) to do with kelly before he did his knee. I remember most weeks he would kick 2 goals aswell as get 25 touches. He would have been leading our B&F before he went to Subi and got injured

Lingy had his colours lowered today by Burgoyne.

Although Ling had 25 possessions, 6 marks and a goal, he made that shocking mistake with the smother which lead to a Port goal and Burgoyne had 22 possessions, 8 marks and a goal.

It's something I've often wondered.

Despite his sometimes atrocious kicking (and the one he got today was an absolute helicopter) his kicking for goal is generally quite good. He can also take a strong overhead mark as well, so just provides another option to go long to.

Half the problem is that he gets the ball on his wrong side about 80% of the time. His right foot is useless.

burgoyne was one of their most damaging players and that smother led to port turning the impetus geelong had around. id say burgoyne took the honours.

i think lings kicking for goal and marking are good. its his slow decision making and disposal around the ground that really lets him down.

I thought he was extremely poor again. Any suprise that Port Adelaides two most damaging players were on both Ling and Hunt?

What is worying is that Ling came off the ground and on a TV interview said that he was pretty happy with his performance. Hate to have seen Burgoynes performance if Ling had been beaten!

Not only is he useless, he has now proved himself detrimental to the side. It took us supporters a long time to see past his high possession, negligable impact game style. It was only this year, now that we have entered an era of footy where possessions mean nothing (e.g. Bowdens, Kane Cornes), that we see how poor Cameron Ling actually is.

Lingy's first half was nothing short of shocking. Basically gave away 2 goals and several free-kicks. He got better as the game went on though.

He is starting to play much better but we just can't afford to turn the ball over the way he does at least half a dozen times a game against a quality side.

Sorry dude, have to disagree.

1. Gave away at least 2 stupid free kicks by getting caught with a handful of jumper.

2. Kicked the ball on the full off his right foot under no pressure.

3. Allowed his kick to be smothered that directly led to a Port Adelaide goal.

4. Same quarter, allowed Burgoyne to outmark him and goal at 3 quarter time.

Just hope others notice his mistakes.

Mate, i agree with you on all those points, but still think that he held his opponent to a level below his best.

Over the past season he has been well down on form. With this in mind he should be working harder to get to more contests and when there dispose of the ball quicker. As a team leader his example of being slow by hand or foot hurts the team and its morale.

If your are a slower player you need to be able to get to more contest and dispose of the ball far quicker than he presently does. Have watched him run away from contests to follow his man, as if he is scared to make a mistake. I do not mind the fact that he runs away from a contest to man up but surely sometimes you have to committ for your team to put on ball pressure and hope your team-mates rotate to cover for you.

We have mentioned in previous threads that he could be value in a trade but we will not trade him. So he needs to lift his game and show true leaderships skills. Stand in front of your man, run with your man, tackle your man, beat your man, do not be second to every contest, use the ball better.

His skills are down and for several years now he has missed targets, by quite a big margin, either by hand or foot. He needs to get better or the game wll have past him by. Not in the class of a Williams, Ratten or like player so needs to be better in all aspects of his game.

The goal kicked after the siren was caused by him not being in front and backing himself, he was hoping for an error by Port, not prepared to make the effort himself. I would rather him be positive than what would appear to be slow and lazy. His best games are when he gets a lot of the ball and tags out his man maybe he should remember this and play on his strengths not on his weaknesses.

Oh i do, don't you worry about that. Worst 25 possession game ever. And i also thought Mackie was awful even though he had 16 and 6 marks. God he's just such a boy, should only play at Telstra Dome really.

Ling was bad.

I have always been a fan of Mackie. Even after watching the Carlton game for the second time, I thought it would be a shame if we got rid of him.

Then, watching him against Port, the words "hasn't taken the next step" kept popping into my head. Agile, quick, tackles hard, gets the pill. But his disposal and ball-handling have both been average for four years now, and are still quite a long way off the required level. If he doesn't fix those problems very quickly we should move him on.

Same goes for McCarthy by the way. I love him because he goes hard, takes a big grab, is very mobile for his size, etc, etc. Basically has it all, except that he CAN'T KICK. Unless his kicking improves out of sight very quickly, he is simply not up to AFL standard. And given he is 24 and has been in the system for a few years already, and his kicking isn't even close, I don't like his chances.
