I would like to get rid of this windows 8 and get Linux ubuntu or mint.

I've downloaded both at separate times and failed to get it installed.

What I would like to know is if there is anyone in melbourne I can go to get get it on this computer properly?

Have you removed Windows 8?
Have you turned Secure Boot off and enabled Legacy Boot in your BIOS?

No.
What happened when I did install it was when it would load i got the option of windows 8 or linux. every time i clicked on the linux OS it never worked.

if i remove windows 8, how will i install it? when i had it on a USB it wasn't recognizable in the start up. And i have no disc drive

If you want to boot from USB, you must turn off Secure Boot in the BIOS as it will prevent the system from loading any other OS.

Ok well to access the BIOS in a Win8 machine you need go to Settings>Change PC Settings>General>Advanced Startup>Restart now>Troubleshoot>Advanced Options>UEFI Firmware Settings>Restart.

Once the BIOS menu pops up go to the Security tab and find Secure Boot, click enter and then disable Secure Boot.

I don't have the change PC settings in my settings o_O

Wait so you have Linux installed correct? And you no longer have Win 8 on your machine?

Windows 8 works, at start up its just the same as before, i have the option of ubuntu but it doesn't work, only win8 will work

BotsMaster unfortunately it didn't work
As a tip there buddy, when you have a problem, people need to know what exactly is happening. There are a million different ways something can "just not work."

If you describe in some detail what happens after you power up, you will get more accurate advice and save yourself some time.

Read back a bit, the problem is exactly the same as before. I think i've been pretty clear.

I'm grateful botmaster is trying to help

It sounds like when you power on, you reach a bootloader screen asking you to choose between Windows and Linux, and when you use the arrow keys to highlight Linux and press Enter... what happens? No response? It displays an error message? The machine reboots? It loads the wrong operating system? "It never worked" isn't clear.

It just takes you back to the selection again

From what I can gather, you have installed Linux within the Windows environment and not actually booted from your USB allowing Linux to load itself which doesn't work (I know as I have done this as well).

How to do it from USB then? I'm not that savvy unfortunately but i love the ubuntu os so i just have a thing that i must have it

I'm just gonna buy a preloaded laptop or go to a shop and see if someone can do it for me lol i give up

my advice just buy a new hard drive with nothing on it and install linux clean.

there have been loads of people with problems trying to install linux on a machine which already has windows 8.
