To all linuxites, quick question. Which distro do you guys prefer?

Now I am a born & bred Windows man but I have been (for job purposes) been required to instal in a virtual setup a few different flavours of Linux and I must say ubuntu linux does come up miles ahead of the others. That's probably because it utilises the GUI far better then the others & I think it is a big step in the right direction.

For all the linux diehards out there, a few pro's & con's of each distro would be handy to know so I (and a few others!) can get some expert views!!

Zenwalk. Slack based distro that is "purer" than most others in that it stays true to source based files.

Very fast. Very light.

For newbies I would always recommend Ubuntu though.

Ubuntu. I only really use the Live CD when I mess with Windows and need to back up on Ubuntu before I reformat Windows.

When the next version of Ubuntu comes out I probably will get it a proper install though.

Linux has come along way but unfortunately their application installation methods are still miles behind windows or mac.

Eh - apt, yum and netpkg are great application installers. Compiling from source is far superior than the one size fits all method of Windows packages.

Not ubuntu- $sudo apt-get install program

Or the Synaptic Packet Manager, it's great. Just search, download and sit back while it installs.

Shits all over mac and/or windoze.

You have got to be joking? If only windows was so easy as Synaptec package Manager.

I have a couple of installations, Ubuntu on my laptop coz I'm lazy, but for server installs my current flavour is Centos 5.1

I have installed and am currently using Ubuntu 10.10 on my downloading PC and I have to say that FINALLY Ubuntu is user friendly....:D

I know there are a lot of Linux enfooz that have claimed that for a while now, but in reality it was a difficult OS for the average Joe.

Installation of apps was always my bugbear with Linux but with Synaptic, it is bloody brilliant to say the least. I use to think Mac was simple but this is even easier (Windows coming in last unfortunately in this department:().

Does any boont specialist know how well it handles media i.e. avi's and vobs?

P.S. Still can't part with my W7 ;)

^ I've been using Ubuntu exclusively at home since 8.04. They have done well in improving their user experience with every release and I felt that 9.10 was the version that made it seem right for anyone. The next version will come with the Unity desktop interface as it's default.

I haven't installed 10.10 yet, so I'm looking forward to playing with the latest version soon. My last upgrade to 10.04 including codecs, encrypted dvd support and VLC works without a hitch. I haven't had any issues with multimedia files.

For a fresh install of 10.10, this link might help you out. When you have enables the multimedia extras, add VLC from the repository to play multimedia.
