The following are the 6 players I rate as the most valuable at the club.
1. Voss - complete package; leader, tough, few players can play both midfield and be so dangerous pushing forward. Aka's goal sealed the GF against the pies, but Voss's second effort resulting goal after clashing with Freeborn was more critical.
2. Michael - best full back in the league. From a fringe player to the second best player at the lions.
3. Johnno - best defensive/offensive small backman in the league. Has turned from an erratic forward to consistent backman.
4. Lappin - A few years ago on the official lions forum I wrote a thread titled "N Lappin crunch year". At the time I believed Nigel to be at the crossroads of his AFL career. I 98 I rated him as one of the main culprits for our bottom of the ladder finish. He was the first to go missing when we were getting beaten. Has since been a prolific ball winner and rarely wastes a disposal. At this point in time, he is slightly ahead of Aka and Black.
5. Leppa - A little off the boil this year; I would have rated him higher over the last couple of years, second only to Voss. Has been badly beaten on a couple of occasions this year. Showed against the Roos he is still dangerous pushing forward.
6. C Scott - along with Ashcroft, probably the most selfless player at the club. Will sacrifice own game for the team. Important half back who can push forward.
Apologies to Black and Aka.
